I like it a lot ! With configuration, for those who choose not hiding the dock, to have by default applications launchers, one click on Ubuntu icon switches to dock with Dash, Places, virtual desktops, trash..., another click re-switch back to applications icons etc... It leaves more space on launcher dock to put many applications icons, perfect. [Ayatana] [ayatana] Enter for quick selection in Unity menu
I have an idea for functionality of the new Unity menu (Ubuntu button menu), when searching for an application/file to launch/open I don't mean to compare the awesome searching/launching functionality of Unity's search to similar searching as done in Gnome-Do, but I find myself trying to press 'Enter' trying to launch the first item when I do a search for an application, to no avail. For instance, when trying to find the application Hydrogen, it's quite easy to: [Super]hydro (as seen http://anthonyrhook.com/ubuntu/unitylaunch.png) and seeing it at the top of the list, assume 'Enter' would launch it. I'm not sure what other issues this may cause, as I would guess the first entry would have to be auto-highlighted for it to be launched/opened/etc. Any other thoughts on this? Perhaps it's been discussed and I'm late to the conversation, too. -- - Anthony Hook ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ayatana Post to : ayatana@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ayatana More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ayatana] [ayatana] Enter for quick selection in Unity menu
I posted the same idea in the Ubuntu forums; I think the search shold show the results just like now, but highlighting one of them, that will be launched if the user presses enter. This would make it really useful and fast for the user. And if it was like Gnome-Do, that learns from past user selections, it would really be great. In fact, maybe some code of Gnome-Do or similar applications could be used there. 2011/3/10 Anthony Hook anthony.ho...@gmail.com I have an idea for functionality of the new Unity menu (Ubuntu button menu), when searching for an application/file to launch/open I don't mean to compare the awesome searching/launching functionality of Unity's search to similar searching as done in Gnome-Do, but I find myself trying to press 'Enter' trying to launch the first item when I do a search for an application, to no avail. Re: [Ayatana] No one will ever use the upper-left Ubuntu button
Hi everyone, I really like the idea of having the dash flip on interaction with the ubuntu button. It is surprisingly elegant as a space saver. However, I do find some problems with it. 1. It makes accessing places somewhat harder, and since this is something I use often, it seems to detracts from my work flow at least. 2. It effectively hides the wonderful shortcuts of supera and superf, making it less clear that they could in fact always be available (as you would suspect them to be, i.e. global/universal). 3. I like how from the places icon in the dash you can search for files, and that you can do the same from the applications icon, but in the end I often use universal search (synapse, gnome-do, kupfer) to find what I need, which seems to be something that the ubuntu button could do very well when clicked (it does need some improvements, like selecting the most likely result, etc, such as these launchers do). 4. We cannot DnD to the folded side of the launcher. These seem like harsh critiques, but they're not, really. I'm simply stating that these are some problems with the idea, but I suspect they can be fixed somehow. Some possible solutions: 1. Not too big of a problem, may not need a fix at all... 2. When holding down the super key we could show all icons with shortcuts, so mix the places and app icons in or, maybe show them in a second row of the launcher (sort of like unfolding it) temporarily. 3. We could solve this one by adding an icon on the folded side of the launcher for universal search, or show the current version of the dash, just as we do now, combined with the flipped launcher. 4. When DnDing, unfold the launcher, just like in 2. Thank you all for you're time. I hope we can make this idea work! Greetings, Arian 2011/3/10 Oscar RdG oscar...@gmail.com Hi there, I like it!! I've been using ubuntu since 6.10, and I love to see all of the progress that it's made since then. So far, I'm delighted with Unity, and barring a few issues of missing features, am ready for natty. (Actually, I should say I really can't wait for natty. It will be totally awesome!) Anyway, I have noticed something that feels inconsistent to me: The Unity Panel. It feels out of place to me. It's hard to describe with words, so I do have a couple of pictures: Here's one at a default configuration: http://ubuntuone.com/p/h8E/ And a possibly tweaked configuration with the transparency set: http://ubuntuone.com/p/h8D/ Most of Unity's central design is dark, solid backgrounds with white outlines and highlights. It's a strong design, and it feels clean, slick, and modern. But the panel doesn't fit this at all. [Ayatana] We need a short-term solution for mail applications and the messaging menu
Hi all, Let me start the discussion by saying I agree with Matthew: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-desktop-n-coherent-behavior-for-apps-in-messagingmenu http://design.canonical.com/2011/03/quit/ The engineering solution here is for messaging clients to split out the code that checks for new messages, so that it can optionally run even while the rest of the application is not. However, I don't think this separation is coming anytime soon. Meanwhile, for several releases now Evolution is being the only inconsistent application in the Messaging Menu, the only that quits on close, the only one that needs to be present on both the MM and the taskbar (soon to be Unity Launcher). Thunderbird is getting Messaging Menu support with the exact same problem, and to make things worse we will now not only have redundancy of presence, but also redundancy of information presentation: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~indicator-applet-developers/evolution-indicator/trunk/revision/77 http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/03/thunderbird-getting-some-unity-love/ Evolution/Thunderbird should be on the launcher, or the messaging menu, but *not* on both of them. I don't expect a patch that modularizes Evolution or Thunderbird dropping from the sky, so we need a short term solution instead of continuing to ship the current, horribly redundant, situation. My suggestion is to either accept Geoff Goehle's patch: https://code.launchpad.net/~goehle/evolution-indicator/dont-quit-on-close/+merge/42151 or to remove Evolution from the Messaging Menu entirely, as it can be argued that email is not something you should be interested in being constantly notified about anyway and Evolution consumes a lot of memory. Another option, that might not be any more practical than factoring out evolution's mail-checking code: - Fix mail-notification's ssl issues by switching to gnutls - Get mail-notification using the messaging menu instead of the notification area (Optionally) - Let evolution export account settings so mail-notification runs automatically. Now this possibility disappeared, it's available with middle click. Hello Xavier. I've leaned over the table and enquired about this, and John has told me that the middle-click shortcut is supposed to be *in addition* to the means of opening a new window via the right-click QuickList. Apparently it's a co-incidence that one temporarily disappeared whilst the other was being introduced. No, it has been done on purpose as asked on bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/709707 See the comment 3. The idea is to add quicklist entries in the desktop files when we know applications support multiple instances (which isn't always the case, like devhelp which doesn't open a new one but focus the existing instance), or when it doesn't do thing wrong (like gimp, opening a new full instance with toolbar and such and not only a new document). Some guidance about how to do that is available there: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity/LauncherAPI#Static Quicklist entries We are still discussing on the xdg list about the OnlyShowIn values (Unity or X-Unity) before launching a campaign of community help :) Didier ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ayatana Post to : ayatana@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ayatana More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Martin Pitt has proposed merging lp:~pitti/indicator-session/extra-launcher-dir into lp:indicator-session. Requested reviews: Ted Gould (ted) Related bugs: Bug #727823 in Session Menu: Enable Gnome-Control-Center in Unity, and add System Settings link to the session indicator menu https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-session/+bug/727823 For more details, see: https://code.launchpad.net/~pitti/indicator-session/extra-launcher-dir/+merge/52813 Hardcoding a single extra launcher path is impractical for distributions, as multiple packages would collide on the name and wouldn't give any extra customization possibility for OEMs. This branch adds support for reading /usr/share/indicators/session/applications/*.desktop and appending them to the session indicator. This will allow us to implement bug 727823 for Ubuntu while retaining the OEM customization possibility. /usr/share/applications/indicator-session-extra.desktop should be obsoleted.
