[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New Bedford Churches

2009-01-12 Thread Patricia Butcher
Hi Nancy,
Glad you enjoyed St Lawrence Catholic Church
website. To answer your question about my
Pereiras. Yes, they first settled in New England,
New Bedford, MA. My grandfather, Thomas & brother
Manuel Perry, were born in Cedros, Faial but both
immigrated to New England in the late 1800's. I
have about 4 Joe Perry's in my family.all
with Faial ancestry. A common Portuguese name. I
will post their sister's info below, the elusive
great Aunt that I haven't located descendants of
in the US. I try to post this once a year in
hopes that a new list member might recognize something.
=
Helpful Information: I have a Great Aunt, Maria Rosa Jorge, daughter of
Thomas Pereira Jorge de Escobar & Maria Rosa
that has been my brick wall for 8 years. I'm trying to locate descendants.
Maria Rosa Jorge was born 3-28-1882 in Cedros,
Faial, Azores. She immigrated in 1893 at 11yrs of
age with sister, Maria Adelaide Jorge 17yrs old,
to RI. SS Vega, 1893. Her older sister married &
died less than two years later in RI. Maria Rosa
was only 13yrs old when her sister died in 1895.
No one in the family knows who she lived with or
had any contact with her for years. She was alive
in 1950 at 68yrs of age. Surprisingly appeared at her brothers funeral in
Jamestown, RI. I do not have her married name but
was told she married young. This family lived in
New Bedford, MA & RI so I have been searching
both areas. She could have used the name Perry
(Pereira). Maria Rosa Perry or Maria
Jorge. Maria Clara Jorge (George or Perry) The
double surnames are challenging to work with. My goal is to find her
marriage or death record. Thanks...

Patricia

[AZORES-Genealogy] New Flemish article on Azores GenWeb site

2009-01-12 Thread Kathy Cardoza
Hello Everyone

I just posted today, a new submission by André Claeys, the gentleman
who has submitted other articles to the Azores GenWeb site, based on
his research of the genealogy of some of the Flemish colonists. He
wrote this new genealogy of Jorge da Terra from the island of Faial.
It is illustrated and approx. 56 pages long, and posted as a PDF. As
his other submissions have been, this is written in the Dutch language
but, it should be fairly easy to do a search for a name that could be
contained in the document. Also, at the end of the document, is a
translation of many of the words in it from Dutch to Portuguese to
English.

Enjoy!

Rick,

I've got my computer scanning itself, so I'm getting errors about
opening the files. I'll try again later or from a different computer.

Maybe this was one of the records that was written later and the
priest/scribe just flat out goofed up and put some other Maria as
Antonio's wife? Couldn't read the original notes (due to rain, spilled
vinho, etc) and took a guess? But didn't they have it read back to
them?

Question...Did you find Anna (b. 1839)'s marriage or death? Who did it
say her parents were? Or Anna as a mother having kids?
[rpimen...@peoplepc.com] That is something I am going to have to look
for. There are no margin notes on the record so perhaps she died as an
infant or child. I do not have any record of the grand parents. This is
like looking for a needle in a hay stack. I think my best bet is to look
at obits and hope she died young. If she married then I should have it
if it was before 1884 and I don't.
Some times I wonder why I peruse mysteries like this which are not in my
direct line.

Hi Rick,

I've seen a couple of records where the parents weren't married (or were
married to other people) and the records clearly state that. I saw one
where it said the woman was married to so and so and the father was an
adulterer! George Pacheco and those that research for others have seen
many of these types of records.

I think the priest forgot the words "sua mulher". Maybe it's his second
wife as the first one died after having the 5 or 6 kids??

Rick,

Well, my casanova ggrandfather had one child with his wife and 3
months later another child with another woman who is listed as
solteira.  In this case, it says pai incognito but he is named as the
grandfather in a later record.

Do you think the legitima is because he recognized the child as his
even though they were not married, but I would think legitima would be
if they were married??

Are you snowed in still?  My nephew recently moved to your neck of the
woods and I am not so sure, even though he came from MA, he was
prepared for all the snow you have.

Hi Gordon,

listed.  I must have copied the outlying areas and not the entire Oakland
area.  They have many Oakland city directories at the Oakland Main Library, in
case you have not tried that.  Celeste

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New Bedford Churches

2009-01-12 Thread nancy jean baptiste

Hi Patricia,
Thanks so much for the link to St. Lawrence. What a beautiful church..I
like envisioning my ancestors and their rituals occurring in these churches so
many years ago!
Are your Pereiras from New England? We do know that Joseph Perry/Jose Pereira
was from Sao Jorge. Beira is what we were told. I anxiously await the CCA
records for Beira becoming available. Now that I know his parents were Antonio
Pereira and Zabina de Jesus I will be able to find his Baptism and perhaps
names of other siblings. We think he had a brother Frank Perry.
Jose was taken from the dock at Velas when he was 12 and used as a cabin boy.
He was eventually sold into white slavery and ended up in England as a stable
worker for a "Duke?" (so the story goes)..he was eventually given his
freedom and a Hamilton watch that my brother still has. He went to the gold
rushI wish I could find his ship records coming into Ca. He left by ship,
spent some time in Brazil and learned the trade of cigarmaker, left there and
the story goes that he jumped ship off the Mass. coast and walked to New
Bedford and found relatives who sent for a bride for him. She was from Pico,
Rosa Luiza, they had 12 childrenall in New Bedford. Can't find her either!
Good luck with your elusive Aunt...I bet lots of genealogists like
mysteries since the search for our ancestors is an on going one!
Kind regards,
Nancy

Legitimate would mean they were married. What was the other wife's name?
Could it be that the wife was also known by another name. E.g. my paternal
grandmother was Maria da Estrela, Maria Leonor and Maria Cândida de Jesus!
