My great, great gradfather Christano Dobales is listed as being from
Portugal on his son's (my great grandfather) death certificate
 (Francisco Dobales born in 1852).

There is a good chance that Christano came from the Azores...possibly
on a whaling boat to California. He and other relatives/friends
settled in Fresno County, CA (Firebaugh, Madera) and were
sheepherders. I can't find a death record for him so I don't know if
he died here in the States or went back to his homeland.

All of the Dobales' (and some Dovales') here in California are my
 relativesjust can't find Christano.

 I'd appreciate any help.
The name was probably de Vales or De Valles back in the Azores.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Surname David

2009-03-25 Thread Marralha
It is possible that this name originates from an ancestor who was a
foundling, i.e., a baby abandoned at birth, and given the first name David at
baptism.
His descendants would have taken one of 3 surnames: 1-da Câmara, if David was
a ward of the state which paid a stipend for the first year of life to the
foster parents, 2- the name of the family that fostered him; e.g. if he was
raised by Mr. and Mrs. Machado, then the descendants might have taken Machado
as a
family name, or, and most likely, 3- David became the surname, e.g., David's
son José then becomes José David. I have several examples of all 3 cases in my
lineage.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Surname: Dobales

2009-03-25 Thread Julie Doblaes

Thanks. That is helpful.

The spelling had to have been different because it is very difficult
to find people outside of California with the spelling of Dobales.
Although, there have been a few in Hawaii and there is a city in Cuba
named Dobales.

It seems to be relativly common Portuguese surname. I put it in the
Immigration search for Ancestry and got over 20 returns.
