Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Romeiros - Azorean History

2011-04-23 Thread celeste perry
On one of my Spring time visits to Sao Miguel, Azores I saw the Romeiros.  I
had no idea what they represented and the taxi driver, Carlos Rego, explained
the meaning of the men and boys (no women) we saw all over the island.  I was
visiting all the village churches where my husband's 3 grandparents and their
ancestors had been baptized, married and lived.

It seemed to me, the procession was always in motion.  Only one time did I see
them stop at a park and lie on benches to rest.  They walked and walked all
around the Island.  I asked about their eating and I was told that food was
brought to them from the village closest to them.  This group walked for the
entire week before Easter.

2011-04-23 Thread rcapodc
Pat, it's about time I connected with some of my original group! Susan
Vargas Murphy is the only one I ever connected with when I was doing my
newsletter!

The grgrandfather that finally connected me with Familias is Bartholomeu
Machado Lemos and his wife Isabel de Sousa. Marcio Borba told me
originally about their marriage record in 1706 Calheta, Sao Jorge. Once I
had that and their parent's names I was off and running. I got info from
Familia Faialenses, the Genealogies of Sao Jorge by Fagundes Azevedo and
also Nobiliario da Ilha Terceira. There are some discrepencies but for the
most part they all three agree.

2011-04-23 Thread John Raposo
I have always had excellent results with this site. And, as Eloise pointed out,
if your ancestor was not born and/or married in a particular parish, you will
not find them there. Why? Because UMinho has loaded all of the existing parish
records. If a person was not married in a particular village, you will not find
their marriage there, etc. I have not found any omissions or errors (an
omission is a birth or marriage that should be there but isn't; an error is
somebody whom the site says was born or married there but was not). My advice
in these matters is always the same: verify! Verifying is much easier that
doing the research from scratch. If UMinho says that your ancestors, Zé Povinho
and Maria da Paciência, were married in Velas on New Year's dat 1706, go to
your local FHC, order the film and look up the record. If it is not there, then
you should not assume that the information is correct.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Accessing your genealogy from your iPhone or handheld device (NOT Dropbox)

2011-04-23 Thread Maria Lima
 Thanks, Gayle,

I got excited about the prospect of being able to take my genealogy to FHC
with the Reunion- app on my iPhone but, alas- it is only for MAC.

Short-lived enthusiasm. But maybe someone else out there uses Mac. I learn so
much from this group.

Thank you for sharing. I am learning so much about our heritage from the
Sao Miguel area, and those that settled in Fall River. I feel that I have
missed so much of the island customs having been raised on the West Coast.
Yes we have the Holy Ghost parade and most of the foods that all of you
have shared recipes for, but I am always learning of more customs. Please
keep sharing.

Happy Easter to all,

Ally

[AZORES-Genealogy] PONTA GARÇA ancestors

2011-04-23 Thread Eliseu Manuel Pacheco da Silva

Hi group!

I have RITA DOS ANJOS born around 1745 in Ponta Garça, daughter of Francisco
Botelho da Mota (1705-1776) and Antónia Josefa de Macedo (around 1709-1747).
Rita married to José da Silva 1776 in Porto Formoso.

Does anyone have information on the collaterals of Rita dos Anjos?

Happy Easter to everyone!
