[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese citizenship

2012-01-26 Thread Tomas Leal
In response to some of the questions and statements regarding
Portuguese citizenship:

Reason for wanting citizenship:
My reason is purely sentimental, a greater connection with my Azorean
grandfather and the family there. In fact, I already possess Irish
citizenship and passport via my mother's father, so I have EU status.

The U.S. "ignores" other citizenships rather than accepts them. To the
U.S., a citizen is a citizen and that's that. Because of the
relationship with Israel and that country's granting of citizenship to
anyone Jewish, the U.S. has ignored the dual-citizenship issue. As far
as the U.S. is concerned, I am only an American citizen.

How I found what I needed:
I knew my grandfather's village--Flamengos, Faial--and thus knew the
parish. All parish records from those years are stored in the new
library in Horta. All I had to do was look up his baptism record by
the date. He was baptized a few days after his birth, so I easily
found the original document. Because I still have a way to go with
citizenship, I have only a photocopy for my own interest, not an
official copy. When I need that, I will get it.

Because of the strong position of the Catholic Church in Portugal, a
baptismal record counts as a birth certificate. In fact, there is no
birth certificate for most people of that time. When getting Irish
citizenship, I used a certified copy of that grandfather's baptism
certificate, and that was all that was needed to prove Irish birth.
Because my grandparents immigrated (separately) to the U.S., they
married in San Francisco, where my mother was born and married and
where I was born. The paperwork proving my connection was easily
obtained--took about five minutes.

My Azorean grandfather also immigrated to San Francisco, where he
married my grandmother. My father was also born here. Thus, once I
have the Portuguese document, I will easily have everything I need to
prove my connection.

"Benefits" of EU citizenship:
Having EU citizenship allows me to live and work within the EU.
However, it does NOT make available all the benefits. I have never
paid into any European health plan; thus, I cannot get national health
insurance anywhere in the EU. For that, I must be employed and pay the
taxes. In 2010, I had a medical emergency and had to pay completely
out of pocket. Fortunately, medical care in the EU is nothing close to
what is in the U.S. Treatment that would easily have cost over $1,000
cost me about $175. My own medical insurance reimbursed my
prescription costs less my co-pay, and the ER cost was less than my co-
pay, so I got nothing.

An additional reason for pursuing Portuguese citizenship is there are
some work possibilities for me there. Should something come through, I
would go into the tax system and thus contribute to the various
programs such as health care. I could then, possibly, get some kind of
coverage.

I understand that Americans can have dual citizenship (with other
countries that also allow it).

2012-01-26 Thread eric edgar
No, you can be a US citizen and be a citizen of an EU country. The US sees
you just as a US citizen like anyone else. I recently completed a project
for a person who

was granted Italian citizenship through the grandparents. Their rules
differ from Portugal in that they don't require the residency or the
languague test. Irish citizenship

standards similar to Italy's. I have a friend who's work at the Irish
consulate was to verify the genealogical records establishing parentage.

Hi Joan,

You are very early in your family quest for information. All the names you
mention are in my files and I am sure in many other's on our list. The thing is
that you need to go back at least another gerearation with some good dates of
either a birth, baptism, marriage, or death from the parish the person was
from. Nossa senhora da Luz would be the parish for Flamengos. Faial is a small
Island and at some point we are all related or connected by marriage. Keep at
it and with time you'll find more information to grow your family.

I, too, am searching for ancestors from Faial. One branch is, according
to information from my great-aunt, from Flamengos: family names Pereira
(da) Rosa, Silva, Fialho, Gonsalves.

The earliest dates I have are for Thomas Pereira Rose, b. 1833 in
Flamengos, Faial, d. 1929 in Fremont (Alvarado), CA. He married Maria
Claudina Fialho in Mission San Jose, CA, dau. of Joao Fialho and Maria
Claudina. According to the notes from my g-aunt: Thomas Rose came
to San Francisco on a whaling ship & jumped ship to go to the gold
fields during the Gold Rush. He returned to the Alvarado area and bought
17 acres from George Patterson with proceeds from his gold panning. After
a few years he paid passage for Maria Claudina Fialho to come from the
Azores to marry him. He did not know her personally, so in essence she
was a "mail-order bride." She stayed with relatives in
Decoto (Union City) and he gave her six months to decide if she wanted to
marry him. The property remained in the family until Thomas's daughter,
Rita, sold it in 1958.

[Rita was the second child, born June 06, 1872, in Fremont (Alvarado),
CA, and died April 1967 in Fremont.] I do not (yet) have birth and
death dates for Thomas Pereira Rose, Jr., the oldest child. Thomas &
Maria Claudina's third child was my g-grandmother, Anna Eugenia Pereira
Rose (b. April 22, 1878, Fremont (Alvarado), CA; d. December 31, 1963,
Fremont). Anna Eugenia married Manuel Gonsalves da Silva on Dec. 30,
1893, in Fremont (Centerville), CA. I have a picture of my
g-grandparents & their 7 living children from c. 1939 (my mother
identified everyone in the picture for me); I knew my G-Grandma Silva,
though not well (I was 14 y.o. when she died).

Do any of these people sound familiar? For now, I am hypothesizing that
Maria Claudina Fialho came from Flamengos, Faial. I am not certain what
village Manuel Gonsalves da Silva was from, but he also was an immigrant
from Faial, possibly(?) Flamengos. Too bad I wasn't interested in
family history when my G-Grandma Silva was still alive. :-(

I am eagerly awaiting the time when the Faial records come on-line,
though I may be able to make a trip to Faial before that, given the slow
pace of digitizing and up-loading. |-O

My grandfather was born in Vila do Topa, Sao Jorges and immigrated to
California at age 10 with his widowed mother and two younger siblings. He
was Joseph Souza Lewis. His birth certificate lists his father's name as ?
Luiz (no first name). That's as far as I've gone so far in that line. His
mother's name was Mary.

Just wanted to let you know that it's possible that the name was changed
when they came to the US.
