RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] PIO/ROSE ancestry
Sharon, Do you know much about your Rosa line? I too have Rosa {Rose, Rosa, Roza or De La Rosa} from the Hollister and Tres Penos areas of San Benito County. I haven't come across any connection yet on the Pio name. From the research I have to far, my Da Rosa line comes from Pico. I do have a relative, by way or marriage, who's involved in local research of the San Benito County area. I'd be happy to direct you to where you can find her. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Headed to Azores tonight, geneology reseach tips?
Hi Sarah Michael Juros, I'm sorry to say that it is a little late now to prepare for a research trip. On Sao Miguel, I would see the sights. Horta, Faial does house the genealogy records (over 100 years old) for both Faial and Pico (as well as Flores and Corvo). But you don't give dates for your ancestors, so if their births or marriages are within the last 100 years, you'll need to request a copy for the Civil Registry. Someone who died in 1954 could have been 20, 40, or 65 years old, so again, I don't know where to tell you where to look. Also, you don't provide the village/freguesia. You won't be able to research without the fregueia. Faial isn't that bad though. I think there's about a dozen parishes there. Also, I would not use American abbreviation. AZ is the United States postal abbreviation for Arizona. I believe for international postal abbreviations, it means Azerbaijan. The Azores doesn't have a postal abbreviation. Since this list is Azores focused, you can probably forget about stating it's in the Azores! Sorry if this sounds negative. I just don't want you to get your hopes up of finding anything when you don't have the village/freguesia in hand. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Headed to Azores tonight, geneology reseach tips?
I gather from other members of this group that in the past few years the Regional Archives housed in the Azorean public libraries in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira, and Horta, Faial, no longer permit patrons to handle the original baptismal, marriage or death registry books, but you can still look at them online in the libraries and print out (for a modest charge) the scanned pages. At the PDL library there are some staff who speak excellent English (I recall in particular one lady with a degree from York University in Canada), while not so much in Horta. Still, the staff might be able to help you decipher some of the writing in those records. As I posted to someone else in this group on another thread recently, if there are places you want to visit, and you can afford it, it may be worthwhile to have your hotel desk clerk or concierge line up a bilingual tour guide to show you around Faial (it's not very big), and request ahead of time an emphasis on the villages where your family is from, mentioning your family surnames -- because your guide may know some folks and places there that you'd enjoy going to see. Back in 2004, the rate was 20 Euros/hour, so it might be more by now. Boa viagem! Katharine. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Rosa Frank Smith
Kim, I just had a long conversation with my mother. She read to me from a book that David Freitas (grandson of Manuel T. Freitas) wrote. Here's what I got.. Francisco Sodre, 4th son of Manuel V. Sodre and Anna Josephine Francisco Sodre also went by the name of Frank Smith, born on San Jorge 4/8/1855 (different from your Frank Smith). Went to New Bedford, MA; was there from 1872-75, then on to Marin (Corte Madera). He married Rosa in 1884, they had 5 children: Anita, Rosa, Maye (my mother knew her), Inez and Josephine (no Marie [Freitas]). Frank Rosa moved to Marinwood and leased a dairy. At some point he became the manager of Manuel T. Freitas' home ranch. Here's what I have on Maria Bettencourt. Parents were Rosa de Silviera (she had 5 brothers who used the name Silva) and Joao Bettencourt. Joao was first married to an English woman. Maria was born in (1879) on Soa Jorge, Riberira de Areia (the same village by grandmother came from). Rosa and Joao moved to Boston, had 2 additional children that subsequently died. Joao changed his name here to John Sylvester -- was a whaling ship captain (I don't know that I quite believe that). Joao died and Rosa's brothers moved her to Marin . She married one of her brother's neighbors, Francisco Vicente Naciemento Sodre. I guess it's the same Frank in both accounts (???) I'm not sure how/if this Frank is a relative of MT Freitas. Once I get the book from my mother I'll through it and see what else I can find. I need a large white board to sort this all out. [AZORES-Genealogy] Se' d'Angra Terceira
I have a bit of a Terceira history/geography question that is driving me crazy. Francisco Machado Barcellos was baptized about 1872 at Se' d'Angra according to his marriage certificate in 1896 when he was then residing in Sao Bartolomeu (natural baptizado na freguesia da Se' d'Angra concelho Diocese dita, morador na freguesia de Sao Bartolomeu dos Rigatos do dita concelho Diocese). On the CCA site, they have data for Se' but only to about 1800, nothing later. Before I go renting lots of film, I guess what I am wondering is where do I look for Francisco's baptismal record, Santa Luzia, Se Cathedral, Nossa Senora de Conceicao, or all of them, even including the other two churches in Angra do Heroismo? Does Se' in 1896 refer to a specific church, as opposed to present day, so they didn't need to elaborate? I also got the dreaded sendo o nubente filho de pais nao sabidos concerning Francisco's parents on his marriage record, although one (but not others) of his son's baptismal record listed his grandmother as Aldina Teodora, so I have a clue, but I really need to look in the right place given his common name, methinks.
