I heard back from the CCA this morning. We’re transferring database the of the site http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca to a new website http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt You have to use this new address. In a few days (probably next Friday) all database will be complete. Sorry for the inconvenience. It seems that words, such as this Friday and next Friday can be misunderstood. So I don't know if they are aiming for what I happen to call this coming Friday (Feb. 24) or what I call the next Friday (March 2). Maybe what I call this coming Friday is the next Friday. The answer is 1 to 2 weeks. At least I got a timeline! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Norte Grande - impressions
I've got to track the Pereira da Luz line until Manuel Pereira da Luz and Ana Pereira, parents of Manuel Pereira da Luz, born abt 1680 in Santo Amaro, who married first to Luzia Silveira, in Santo Amaro, and second to Maria de Avila, at Velas 16-sep-1736. There's extensive descendancy in Southern Brazil and Uruguay, keeping the surname Pereira da Luz until today. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Rio de Janeiro on São Miguel?
There was a family story that my g-grandfather was from a Rio de Janeiro, and it was written on my g-grandmother's prayer book, along with her birthplace (Ponta Garça - spelled Punta Gassa). It isn't recorded in any articles or official documents. We never knew whether it referred to a birth place or somewhere he had lived, but the Rio de Janeiro notation appeared to refer to him, not her. According to my research so far, both g-grandparents were born and baptized in Ponta Garça about 1855. They were married there in 1876 and had 4 children within the next 5 years. The couple's names are José de Medeiros Pingão and Maria Amelia da Conceição da Costa. They later dropped Pingão. I don't have a specific reference from Ancestry for the Boston arrival--sorry. I was wondering if anyone was familiar with a Rio de Janeiro on São Miguel, because it would solve part of the puzzle. Both g- grandparents immigrated to Hawaii in 1882 (then on to California about 1885). We have no evidence he or they ever went to Brazil, but are not sure where to look for it, except in passport records. I've found passport records and ship passenger lists showing their Hawaii journey, but nothing for Brazil. If there is no evidence there is or was a Rio de Janeiro on São Miguel island, this family story remains a mystery. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Rio de Janeiro on São Miguel?
Mary K, My guess is that the male ancestor did not come from Rio de Janeiro. There isn't one on Sao Miguel island. Since Ponta Garca has a phoentic spelling to it on your source, someone took a guess at Rio de Janeiro and since that is a famous city, that is what they thought they heard. I can't remember how many Ribeirnhas there are in the all the Azores. 4 or 5. If I had to take a real wild guess, I would think that Rio de Janeiro might be Ribeira das Tainhas, next door. Not that the words sound alike. It's just that Ribeira das Tainhas is a long name. And it sort makes sense with what Shirley Allegre found. One migration states him from Ponta Garca (east of Ribeira das Tainhas) and the other states Sao Miguel, Vila Franca meaning the Sao Miguel Arcanjo church in Vila Franca (west of Ponta Garca). Ribeira das Tainhas wasn't an official freguesia until something like 1980. Although some people migrating from Tainhas did state Tainhas, some stated Sao Miguel (Arcanjo) in Vila Franca. I've seen it both ways. The reason I know this is because those are my villages too. Get your ancestors' marriage from Ponta Garca in 1855 from the film. See what they say about where they lived and where they were baptized. That will help clear up your mystery.
