Hi, Karlushko!
I received the first two volumes of Jose Maria Abecassis's books and did
copy all the pages concerning Benarus and Bensabat.  I now have ordered the
next two volumes through inter-library loan at my library.  I can't seem to
find Seriqui Documentos which I had previously thought was a 12 page
booklet.  I'm now waiting for the books to arrive at my library!  I've been
able to figure out some of the Portuguese but there is a lot more I can't
understand.   :-(

Assunto: [AZORES-Genealogy] Jewish names

Hi, all!
I need help with these questions:

1.) According to Geneall and Azores Genealogy, Abraham Seriqui's mother was
FORTUNATA (no surname given). I did read somewhere that the first son had the
father's surname and the second son had the mother's surname. Would that mean
her surname was SERIQUI? When Abraham died in Boston, his mother's name was
listed as ESTHER MARKS. Which would be correct?

2.) Abraham had a daughter, MIRIAM (MARIANA) BENSABAT (her mother's surname),
BENSAUDE, BENARUS (her father's surname). Two questions: Which first name did
she go by. Miriam or the Jewish version, Mariana? She has BENSAUDE in her name,
but the Bensaudes say we're not related. Why would that be in her name, when
it's not in her siblings' names? This name was found in Geneall and Azores
Genealogy.

3.) Another ancestor (in Geneall and Ancestry) married JOAQUIM AFLALO (ISAAC
OHAMA). Why the two very different names? Which is really my ancestor?

Thanking you in advance for any information.

Fortunato is a surname. Portuguese people used gender on surnames long ago,
think that
doesnt happen today. Ex: Coelho, Coelha; Machado, Machada. You will notice that
today records are without gender: Coelho, Machado, Gato, etc..
Fortunata is feminine for FORTUNATO. Today records are shown as FORTUNATO

Yes, thats correct, it is Encarnação
People now adays carry this surname as a devotion, or somewehere down the line
someone descend from a single mother that had Encarnação as a second name.
We all know that woman in Portugal didnt carry parents surnames and used their
second names as Jesus, Conceição, Encarnação and others

[AZORES-Genealogy] Borges/Teixeira

2012-04-15 Thread nics
I have been attempting for several years to find information about my
great-great grandmother, Emilia de Jesus Borges born in 1870 in Sao
Miguel. She immigrated to Hawaii in 1887, lived on Maui and died in
1918 and is buried on Oahu. Her 1st husband was Manuel Teixeira who
originally we thought was also from Azores, but now believe him to be
from Madeira. He is buried in Hana on Maui at St. Mary's church
cemetery, that is all I know about him. They had 8 children Manuel,
Mary, Carrie, Manuel, Jacintho, Clara, Albino and Virginia all of the
children were born in Hawaii. Her 2nd husband was Jose G. Ferreira
(1867-1929) and the 2 children they had together were Elizabeth and
Antone. If anyone has any information about Emilia de Jesus Borges or
Manuel Teixeira, it would be very appreciated! Thank you.

Hi All,

God willing, I will be at the San Jose Conference on Saturday, April 21.
My sis is stable once again and for this we are most grateful.

I wanted to double check the ones who contacted me and said they would be
there to see if this is still the case or not. I will list first names
only, as Celeste needs the scarf count
Celeste, Elaine, Maggie, Rosemarie, Leonore, Karen, Betty, Donna,
Veronica. If your name is not listed and you plan to attend, please let me
know. If
your name is listed and you cannot attend, please let me know this also.
We will try to meet by the registration desk.

Thank you.
