[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: ATMs in the Azores

2013-02-25 Thread Steve Peters
Do check with your card company about fees. When I went, I found that my
Chase card was going to charge hefty fees for both exchange and
out-of-network ATMs. So before I left I got a card from our Schwabb account
that had no fees at all. I did not experience any problems with the chip
thing anywhere in Portugal or the Azores, but that is also worth checking
into. Exchange rate was definitely better with the card than with cash.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: ATMs in the Azores

2013-02-25 Thread Frederick Souza
We were in Sao Miguel six years ago and stayed in Ponta Delgada and had similar
experience. It was particularly easy to do it right from at the main desk of
the hotel. The transaction fee you refer to is very similar to what the fee
was here to convert to Euro's. We did try to use up all of our Euro's before
leaving to return to the US to avoid a similar fee in trading them back to
American dollars. We went for two weeks and started with approximately 2000 in
Euros which we purchased at Bank of America here, and only had to buy more cash
after we did a shopping day and bought some embroidery and souvenirs. BTW,
when you get to the Azores, check out the shops in the airport as you may find
as we did that the stuff they sell is sufficient for your souvenir needs. You
don't say where you are from, but if you are from near Fall RIver, MA, don't
waste time, money and effort buying stuff like wine because it is freshly
imported almost weekly to the stores in Fall River and often is cheaper to buy
here.

charge on these transactions, which work out to about $5-6 per transaction
withdrawing 200 euros. These fees are still less than and currency exchange or
local bank would charge to change dollars.

There is a daily maximum amount you may withdraw regardless of what your bank
allows in the U.S. That maximum is 200 euros, and I always go the limit.

That said, my partner had trouble using a Bank of America debit card, which
the bank was not able to correct while we were there. Upon our return, the
bank issued a new card and there wasn't a problem on the next trip.

Yes, European cards have smart chips in them, which are more secure than the
magnetic strip that American banks refuse to give up. The truth is American
banks know the superiority of the smart chip cards but refuse to invest in a
 changeover.

Unfortunately, it seems you will not know whether your card will or will not
work until you are there. I recommend calling your bank to inform of your
intended use in Portugal. The MultiBanco machines are secure, so that is not
a worry. In contrast, I had repeated trouble using my debit card in Brazil
because of a greater incidence of card theft and fraud. A call to my bank
cleared up with problem and the system cleared my card within 15 minutes.

Whenever travelling out of the country, it's good to notify your bank ahead
of time, giving the dates you will be in particular countries. The same holds
for any credit card you choose to use. Different card issuers have different
security thresholds at which an account may be stopped. No issuer will reveal
its threshold, of course. A call ahead of time prevents this problem.

A lot of people turn off their 12 marker matches. My dad probably has
about 1000 matches at the 12 marker level. That level means that my dad
and the match has a common ancestor thousands of years ago. Since my
pedigree doesn't go back to Fred Flintstone, I take my dad's 12 marker
matches off (there's a setting for that on the FTDNA personal page).

Now if you have a rare surname, or rare DNA, then the 12 marker may have
some limited uses.

There is a marriage record in the freguesia of Santa Bárbara, Santa Maria,
showing Simão Velho - Maria da Fonte as the parents of the groom, Francisco
Velho - bride's name illegible. However Francisco's marriage occurred in

you seek.

My best guess of where to look would be in the freguesia of Nossa Senhora
da Assunção, Vila do Porto. As far as I know, no one has compiled a
database from the Mother Church. If you wish to look further I'll offer
the LDS film numbers.

Yes, it is possible for one brother to have a different mutation or value.

You can think of mutations in terms of a copy machine. You want 25
copies. You get 25. Then next time you get 25. But another time you do
it, the machine somehow gives you 24. That also happens when the
chromosomes make copies.

Bennett Greenspan, the founder of FTDNA originally tested his brothers.
They were the same. Later, he tested his son who was 1 off. So Bennett
finally tested himself and found out he was the mutant who passed it on
to his son.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] SS Harpalien to Hawaii - 1912

2013-02-25 Thread Cheri Mello
Colleen,

Ancestry.com is a company. They was some talk of them selling, but I don't
remember what became of that. (Note: There is no O in the word Ancestry).

PortugueseAncestry.com is part of Lusaweb. Lusaweb was originally designed
to be like a Portuguese hall on the Internet. At one time, they had a
genealogy section, but I don't think it's the focus anymore. LusaWeb has
gone through many changes over the years. I believe most people doing
Portuguese or Azorean research use the CCA Web Site (Centro de Conhecimento
dos Acores - Center of Knowledge of the Azores at
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/) or the use the Azores GenWeb to get
information to get started http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Book

2013-02-25 Thread Cheri Mello
Linda J,

Yes, it's called Portuguese Hawaiian Memories. I think it's $45 or $50 if
they still have any in stock. The Portuguese Hawaiian Society sells them.
I don't have a contact for Doris Namuu, the president, but I have one for
George Nelson: dgn...@hotmail.com. Give him a try. I believe he's on this
list, but you may want to write him directly instead of telling 1000+
people your personal info :)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Matches

2013-02-25 Thread E Sharp
Thanks, Cheri, for the info. After so many years of searching which McNeal
family my husband belonged to it is sure exciting to have found 3
cousins and we are all working together to further the research. The
letter my mother in law left the family said her grandfather came home
from the Civil War found out his wife had remarried and left but I found
that was not the case. She remarried many years later. True he was
captured at Missionary Ridge and went to Rock Island. When I finally found
his father in the 1870 Alabama State Census, it said he had 2 sons that
died in the war so I surmise he must have died going home from the prison
as I did find when he was discharged from it.

Thanks again. We all know I am no rocket scientist when it comes to DNA
and to old to want to learn.

E
