RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] RE: Frank Patrick Holmes

2013-05-15 Thread pico
Hi Vivian,Nice to hear from you. It's very interesting that his family also converted Homem to Holmes. I think I once saw in a book (maybe by Carlos Almeida) that Homem was converted to Holmes and I wondered who else, if anyone, had done it aside from my family from Terceira. The story is that my grandfather's younger brother, Jacinto, came to the US first and started this conversion. When my grandfather came with the rest of his siblings and his mother, he didn't quite like it, but eventually went along with the change. The rest, as they say, is history. :-)Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Hello Doug and Nancy, Frank Patrick Holmes is my cousin and I do all the genealogy for our family.  So I will check out his matches.  The thing is I do not know where his great grandfather who is also Frank Peter Holmes (Homen) was born or died except that it was the Sao Jorge Island.  That is the brick wall in our genealogy.  When I check out the matches and your tree I will see if we have any that could be relatives.  I wish I would have been able to get the copy of the Marriage record from the church in Hanford where my Grandmother Marie G. Holmes and grandfather Manuel Joseph were married.  But I probably will have to go there my self to see if I can get the record.  So I have not found the town yet.  Thank you.  Vivian (Silva) Christy researching: Silva, Machado, Silveria, Veira, Holmes, Homen, Enos, Jose, Souza, and many more.  In Lajes do Pico and Sao Jorge, Tereica, and Faial. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for direction

2013-05-15 Thread pico
Hi Vicki,It's not always the case, but the majority of Portuguese in Hawaii came from either Madeira or Sao Miguel island, Azores. I know some from Terceira and others from Pico, but they are vastly outnumbered by the former. Also, you mentioned "Dorego" which is "do Rego" in Portugal and this is a name that comes from Sao Miguel, even though there are many on Terceira (who descend from Sao Miguel in the 1500s).So I'm inclined to suggest you keep an eye out for Sao Miguel as their origins.Madeiros is Medeiros in Portugal - also "de Medeiros" and very common to Sao Miguel.Find the parents of Gus as passengers to Hawaii and go from there.Good luck!Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

I also descend from Francisca. I have attached a chart showing the direct
line from Francisca to me. Let me know if you find anything. I will also try
to find the baptism records in CCA since the NEPS database shows birthdates
and places in the records from Feteira. I am in the middle of a big website
project right now so I may not get anything done in the next few days, but
should be a little less busy next week.

São = first name starts with consonant and the letter H

Female saints are *always* Santa

There are a small number of exceptions: Santo Tirso, Santo Cristo, Santo Jó ,
São Estêvão, Santo Jeremias
Both may be used interchangeably: São e Santo Tomás de Aquino

The abbreviation for both is a J. (capital J with a period)

Just adding to what Cheri pointed out, there always seems to be an exception to
the "general' rule. When the saint's first name starts with a vowel, (ie
Antonio, Amaro, etc., the proper term is "Santo" I was about to proclaim the
general rule: "Sao" when the saint's first name starts with a consonant, Santo

The word for saint in Portuguese is Sao (properly, it's São). The word for

I know there are many areas of the U.S. that touch the Mexican border and for
those of us in these areas, we may encounter the Spanish language more

familiar to us. They even have lots of cities named in Spanish after saints

So if you are in the habit of typing San on this list, or are new to Portuguese
genealogy and didn't realize the difference, please put a post-it on your
computer that says: Sao Miguel, Sao Jorge, or Sao whatever (if that is your
freguesia).

People write me and say, for example, that they remember a post about Sao
Vicente on Sao Miguel and they can't find it in the archive. So I search the
archive by typing in Sao Vicente and Sao Miguel and I can't find it either.
Then I have to play around with the San and even sometimes the translation into
English.

Please, please, please, stick with the Portuguese spelling!

P.S. On Sao Miguel...it's MiGuel...a G in there...not a Q. That one makes the

I did locate on a cached page from the Azores Regional Government website an
e-mail address for the author, who apparently had a role with a government

that government e-mail address, so I have to assume he is no longer in that

Lorraine
Good luck and have fun. It sounds like you are having fun and things are
turning out well for you. When you get back you will have to fill in some
details, as I was looking to do the same next year. But was not sure how to do
it and I would be traveling by myself. I too have family from both Islands.

Thank you

I made it! My husband and I are having a wonderful visit -Ponta
Delgada,Terceira and now Graciosa, my father's homeland. Beautiful vistas,
delicious food, lovely people, amazing architecture and lots of wine! And the
weather's been good too. Met with Joao Ventura for 4 hours reviewing my family
research and then traveled the island of Terceira with him the next day. Joao
did amazing work tracing my family, so happy with the results and now we have a
new good friend! Off to the "tax office" today to try to locate my father's
home location - know the street from his father's death record. Wish me luck!

I'll write more when I get home.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Military on Sao Jorge

2013-05-15 Thread Eddie Machado
Hey All,

I've run into a couple of references with family members being in the
military. Is there any good webpages or books that discuss the military on
the Sao Jorge during the 1700s?

Thanks,
Eddie

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New to group and need help. Mendonca, Freitas from Faja Grande, flores.

2013-05-15 Thread João Ventura
Hi Jason,

Your great grandfather's baptism record seems to be this one (nº25):
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FLR-LF-FAJAGRANDE-B-1861-1889/FLR-LF-FAJAGRANDE-B-1861-1889_item1/P226.html

Note that it says that he was born in September 4th.

Looking at the 'Casais das Flores' book, these are the details of his
marriage to your great-grandmother: António José de Mendonça [21 anos, f.º
de António José de Mendonça e de Maria Inácia] c. 1899.05.06 c. Maria de
Freitas de Mendonça [21 anos, f.ª natural de Maria da Conceição do Espírito
Santo].

Your great-great-grandparents marriage record is in the 'Fajazinha' parish
from which the 'Faja Grande' was detached in 1861: António José de Mendonça
[f.º de Caetano José de Mendonça e de Inácia Rosa] c. 1850.08.31 c. Maria
Inácia do Coração de Jesus [f.ª de António Coelho Ramos e de Maria Inácia].

If you're going to research Flores, you should get the 'Casais das Flores'
e-book. It's very cheap and you'll help to support the author who did an
amazing job.

Happy researching,

João Ventura
