RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Soutomaior / Souto Maior as a name

2014-03-30 Thread pico
You can find this name in Sao Sebastiao, Terceira in the 1600s and 1700s. Same for Praia da Vitoria, Terceira, Cabo da Praia, Se Cathedral in Angra, Porto Judeu. There are priests in the Terceira freguesias that have the name. Not so common, but I see it a lot on Terceira. I think some priests on Pico, too.I think you'll see it in early Velas records, too. And also in early Topo and Ribeira Seca.Souto is common on Faial, usually as "do Souto" but might have some connection to the other name.Another spelling variation is Sotto-Maior. Sometimes it's Sotto-Mayor.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Cheri, it is a surname, both Portuguese and Hispanic. It is somewhat rare, but,I've come across it in my research (can't say where or when). It also translates ultimately to"thicket" -addmaior, and you get large thicket. On Saturday, March 29, 2014 8:29:13 PM UTC-4, Cheri Mello wrote:I haven't seen it on my research on Sao Miguel. What time span were they having children (the years) do you think?Look
before and after the date of that marriage and when you find one
baptism, compare the names of the padrinhos to the parents listed in
that marriage. If one of the aunts or uncles was a padrinho/madrinha,
then you have the right family, most likely. But when you find these

Hi Everyone

Many of my ancestors are from the Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel area. I would
say that probably more are from that area of Sao Miguel than any other, with
the exception of maybe the villages of Nordeste. Has anyone heard when the
baptism and marriage records for Ribeira Grande will be posted to the CCA
site?

Hi all,

My guess is that something is going on with Ribeira Grande that they
decided to skip it, I'd bet on Graciosa being next.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Opinions of genealogists

2014-03-30 Thread Ubirajara Jales de Lira
Thanks, Doug!

José Gomes de Oliveira and Maria Theodósia de Jesus married between 1867
and 1885. I think that every year or almost, they had child.

The baptism of my great grandmother (Josefa Gomes de Oliveira) was in
April, 1886. She was born in March, 1886. Her padrinhos were Felinto
Pereira Monteiro and Joaquina Maria Monteiro de Farias.

Thanks again.

Ubirajara Jales de Lira.

Look before and after the date of that marriage and when you find one
baptism, compare the names of the padrinhos to the parents listed in that
marriage. If one of the aunts or uncles was a padrinho/madrinha, then you
have the right family, most likely. But when you find these name
variations, pay very close attention to all the details in order to avoid
 tracing the wrong family lines.

 Hello,

I would like to hear from genealogists about a thing: I found one record
of marriage with José Gomes de Oliveira and Maria THEODÓSIA DE JESUS. The
couple that I found on the record of baptism of my great grandmother was
José Gomes de Oliveira and Maria Magdalena do Rosário. Was it usual to
change the name when they baptized the children? If is the same couple, I
 found one more ancestor couple.

Please, tell me what you know about that.

 Thanks.
