You've got the answer for recebidos but I would like to add that normally
it names the place where the marriage took place...recebidos em Santos is
indicative of *where* but I would need to see the document.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Filtering Family Finder matches within the Azores project

2014-08-02 Thread Cheri Mello
Who was asking me how they can filter their matches within just one
project, such as the Azores project?

Roberta Estes, genetic genealogist, explains today in her blog, DNA
Explained:
http://goo.gl/w8hs2s

She assumes we have no intermarriage (32 separate lines at 5 generations)
but you can understand what she means. She also explains a little bit
about what it means to be a match or not.

Of course, this only works if you are part of the Azores project. We ask
that you order through the Azores project because that automatically joins
you. Some people don't know about projects and are just out there in the
main FTDNA database without a home. So you won't see everyone, but if you
have too many matches, the filtering people will help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese Genealogy Workshop: Saturday, September 13, Rhode Island

2014-08-02 Thread Cheri Mello
On Saturday, September 13th, from 8:30 - 4pm, George Pacheco and I are
going to present a Portuguese genealogy class in Rhode Island. It's going
to be fast and furious! The morning session will be using American sources
to find your freguesia. I will do a real scaled down DNA lecture and
software review too (or that's my plan right now). After lunch, George
will do the Portuguese records, and what to look for and then we will be
off to the lab for the hands-on session where you can look at the CCA
records and get assistance! It's similar to Salt Lake, but on a much
smaller scale since we have only 6 ot 6.5 hours to present everything. $40
includes morning coffee and a light lunch.

Because the announcement was designed as a graphic it'll get thrown into
people's spam filters (or the Google Group will throw me in the spam filter
for sending a graphic! It's not picky! I've found myself in there
before!) So if you want the detailed information, email me directly at
gfscherim at gmail.com and I'll get the info to you.

Thanks!

[AZORES-Genealogy] AUSENTE meaning

2014-08-02 Thread Eliseu Pacheco da Silva
LOLOLOL!!! You guys are funny!!! I like the ideia of the milky cows waiting in
deep pain, up in the foggy Azorean ills, for the “camponês” to hurry up… :)

AUSENTE means (at the time) that the ausente was gone far away. The word was
used in the sense of being immigrated, gone to Brasil perhaps at this
particular time, or off to another Island, or at the army… If a father does not
agree with a marriage it simply will not took place. Off to work?! Na. That
is why most of the marriages took place early in the morning so people could go
to work! Plus it was an honor seeing a daughter being married. It meant that
she would be taken care by a man. For the father of the girl it meant that his
daughter was not going to starve, be bad spoken.

In the end the act of marriage was a very “meaning” action. To be “ausente” of
a marriage had always a deep motif!

Like it or not, the father was the top of the pyramid. He was the one who gives
meaning either by his presence or his absence!

Hope it helps :)

not agree with a marriage it simply will not took place. Off to work?!
Na. That is why most of the marriages took place early in the morning
so people could go to work! Plus it was an honor seeing a daughter being
married. It meant that she would be taken care by a man. For the father of
the girl it meant that his daughter was not going to starve, be bad spoken.

In the end the act of marriage was a very “meaning” action. To be
“ausente” of a marriage had always a deep motif!

Like it or not, the father was the top of the pyramid. He was the one who
gives meaning either by his presence or his absence!

 Hope it helps J

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] mtDNA a Sampling of Crypto-Jewish descendents in North East Portugal district of Braganca

2014-08-02 Thread pico
Hi Antonio,Nice find. This is also why I think it's almost just as important to do mt-DNA testing as Y-DNA testing. In fact, I have come to think the most important testing is Y-DNA, then Family Finder, then mt-DNA and the only reason Family Finder is second is that it gives you the MyOrigins look at all your ancestry. But to learn the most we need many, many, many more people to test both Y and mtDNA.I just convinced an old friend of mine to get it done. Someone we both are related to with Pico ancestry.Doug da Rocha HolmesPico Terceira Genealogist=Get ready for NFL Fantasy Football and join me in the newly created Azores Genealogist League. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: AUSENTE meaning

2014-08-02 Thread IslandRoutes
Eliseu,
Thank you for the definition of ausente. I was told it meant absent.
For your description am I to understand that it could be unavoidably absent
(like a soldier stationed away from the village or an immigrant in another
country who could not come home), but it can also mean a deliberate action
from a father who does not approve of the wedding?

AUSENTE means (at the time) that the ausente was gone far away. The word
was used in the sense of being immigrated, gone to Brasil perhaps at this
particular time, or off to another Island, or at the army… If a father does
not agree with a marriage it simply will not took place. Off to work?!
