Carol W,
Did you or Jeff seach WorldCat? I think it's worldcat.org, but I'm not
sure. I can't check for you because I'm at the DNA conference on my cell.
Other list members may know about WorldCat if you don't.

My great grandmother from Horta listed her maiden name, once she was in New Bedford, as "Rodgers."  I'd love to know what the original Portuguese name might have been. --

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Deutilde of the Azores

2014-10-10 Thread linda
I found this description in a 2004 newsletter:

http://www.serralib.org/pdf/SerraNLJanFeb04.pdf

A few weeks ago, we were able to help the San Diego Portuguese Historical
Center in Point Loma.
A staff member at the Historical Center was interviewing a longtime San
Diego resident who has
reached the distinguished age of 90 years. It was revealed in the interview
that she was the subject
of a book written by Lois Kimball, the wife of the Cabrillo Elementary
School principal, some
seventy odd years before. It was about her childhood experience of being
born in the United States,
living for a few formative years in the Portuguese Azores Islands and then
readjusting to American
life when she returns to the States. She no longer recalled the title or
other details of the book..
However, Serra Research Center was able to find through newspaper articles
that the book was
called “Deutilde of the Azores” and published in late 1932 or early 1933.
It was a children’s book
designed to help instruct students on the customs and culture of the
Portuguese. Unfortunately, a
copy of the book was not found in any public or academic library sources.
It would be very
exciting if perhaps someone reading this article might have knowledge of
the book in a personal or
school library and allow the Portuguese Historical Society view the copy!
For now however, Serra
staff is happy to have been able to supply a few details surrounding the
book’s release that were lost
to memory over so many decades.

I need help with the baptismal record of Gregorio - left page, #22.

He was the son of Manoel Antonio Bettencourt and Maria de S??? Ortins and was
born in March 1887.

The grandparents were Faustino Jose Bettencourt and Maria Clara de Bettencourt
(paternal) and Antonio Jose Ortins and Mari de S??? Bettencourt (maternal)

The problem I am having is the mother and maternal grandmother's names - the de
S - can anyone figure that out? It looks like de Sena?? (I don't think
that's it though).

Also, the note in the margin - I can tell that it has do with an obito; but
can't make all of it out.

Any help/suggestions with the above greatly appreciated..

Thank you, so much. This is fascinating. It was always suspected that we had
Jewish ancestry on my mother's side. Also, my DNA ethnic makeup indicates 6%
middle eastern. So that makes sense. But what I find curious is that I don't
recall seeing such a description in any of the other obitos in that family.

My father was born in 1907 in Manaus, Brazil although his parents were from
Viseu area in Portugal. The story is his father (Sebastião dos Santos
Verissimo) "disappeared" in Brazil and my father and his mother returned to
Portugal around 1910. It's suspected that they just split up. I would love to
find out what happened to him. Any suggestions on where to start this search?

Also, I have other family on my mother's side who emigrated to Brazil - São
Paulo I believe, but I haven't yet gotten round to exploring that side of my
ancestry. I do know one was an opera singer in the early part of the 20th
century.
