I have the same situation. Born 1901 went back to Terceira before coming to
America in 1911. I also have them on a ship's passenger list. Also would
there be records of them leaving Brazil.  Where are those records located.
Kathy are you going to the conference? Maybe we can work together on this?

Quite ambiguous, I would say however the the "corrente that he is redering to 
is actually in 1962 seeing that he mentions the 8th above and repeats it as the 
"8th" of March below. Also he does not mention January in the side bar.

I think I’ve translated the body of this document fairly well but; I’m having 
trouble translating the sidebar.  It’s the one on the left, No 2, Maria.  I 
think it says she died on the 8 day of January 1885, (the same day she was 
born) in the parish of Sao Pedro, obit #30. However; I was unable to find the 
obit.  It also says something about 8 March 1962.

Over the years I have tried different methods in entering names into Genealogy 
programs. A major consideration in entering names from Portugal and the Acores, 
is the naming traditions make it very confusing and the fact that names are 
sorted there by first name. Thrown into this mix is the “de, da, do, dos” used 
in names.
 
With this consideration I enter names this way: I enter the “de, da, do, dos” 
at the end of the first name. Example Manuel da Costa is entered: first name 
“Manuel da” last name “Costa”.
Manuel de Sousa da Costa is entered: first name “Manuel de” last name “Sousa da 
Costa”
Names like Manuel Furtado are entered: first name “Manuel” last name “Furtado”
 
Many woman used religious names Such as “Maria de Jesus” and no last name is 
given. In this case I enter the first name as “Maria de Jesus” and no last name 
is used. I have some times found that woman later pick up or use their family 
name. In this case I simply add that name as a last name. Thus her full name 
becomes first name “Maria de Jesus de” last name “Sousa” In cases where woman 
use a family name and no religious name I simply use the parameters as I 
outline for men.
 
One more consideration is that children did not use family names and as such 
were only referred to by their name given at birth. When they reached their 
majority they were then referred to by a full name. Because  of the naming 
traditions I do not arbitrarily assign them a family name.
 
I also found that the genealogy program you use should be able to sort names by 
first name or last name and when entering names allow separate entry of first 
and last name.

current.  Register of obits No. 30 of the current year.  On 8 March 1962.




I know this makes the first sentence seem incomplete, but that's how it looks

I thought I'd throw this one out there for the many who are far more 
knowledgeable about the Portuguese language than I. Years ago I ran across 
the occupation of a long past multi-great grandfather, Manoel Carvalho. The 
record is as clean and easy to read as you could ever want, but the 
occupation is still a mystery to me: bandeira. According to the 
dictionaries I have looked at, a "bandeira" is a flag. A "bandeirante" is 
an armed explorer or pioneer of the type that went to Brazil in the late 
1600s and early 1700s. In that Manoel Carvalho's last two children were 
separated by six years (1697 & 1703) and after the six-year gap he was 
listed as a "bandeira" in the birth of his last child, it was historically 
and logistically possible that he had gone to Brazil during this period 
looking for gold and pioneering inland, then returned home after a half 
dozen years absence, but that's just a hypothesis, and doesn't explain why 
the occupation is listed as bandeira rather than bandeirante. Any thoughts?

One thing I did not address is that when some of our ancestors immigrated their 
last name incorporated the “de, da, do, dos” So the descendants of Manuel de 
Sousa and his cousin Joao da Costa became known as Manuel Desousa (or DeSousa) 
and Joao Dacosta (or DaCosta)and these were the names used by their 
descendants. In this case the last name of their descendants is recorded as 
such. If the ancestor is found under both names. The name is noted in my 
genealogy program which has the capability of sorting all names a person is 
listed under.

Over the years I have tried different methods in entering names into Genealogy 
programs. A major consideration in entering names from Portugal and the Acores, 
is the naming traditions make it very confusing and the fact that names are 
sorted there by first name. Thrown into this mix is the “de, da, do, dos” used 
in names. 

 

With this consideration I enter names this way: I enter the “de, da, do, dos” 
at the end of the first name. Example Manuel da Costa is entered: first name 
“Manuel da” last name “Costa”.

Manuel de Sousa da Costa is entered: first name “Manuel de” last name “Sousa da 
Costa”

Names like Manuel Furtado are entered: first name “Manuel” last name “Furtado”

 

Many woman used religious names Such as “Maria de Jesus” and no last name is 
given. In this case I enter the first name as “Maria de Jesus” and no last name 
is used. I have some times found that woman later pick up or use their family 
name. In this case I simply add that name as a last name. Thus her full name 
becomes first name “Maria de Jesus de” last name “Sousa” In cases where woman 
use a family name and no religious name I simply use the parameters as I 
outline for men. 

 

One more consideration is that children did not use family names and as such 
were only referred to by their name given at birth. When they reached their 
majority they were then referred to by a full name. Because  of the naming 
traditions I do not arbitrarily assign them a family name.

 

I also found that the genealogy program you use should be able to sort names by 
first name or last name and when entering names allow separate entry of first 
and last name.
