What I was implying was that many people have taken all three types of tests (Y-DNA, MtDNA and Family Finder) so the total number of tests taken is much greater than the 930. My Portuguese ancestry comes from my fathers side, I am a female , what sort of tests should I be looking at ordering please. Hi George, A Y-DNA gets the top of your pedigree chart ONLY. Your strict paternal line. Your father's father's father's line only. 37 or 67 markers gets you into a genealogy time frame. I don't know what surname that line winds up with. An mtDNA test gets the bottom of your pedigree chart ONLY. Your strict maternal line. Your mother's mother's mother's line only. The Full Genomic Sequence of Full Sequence test will bring you to a genealogical time frame on about 50% of your matches after that database reaches critical mass. The Family Finder test covers ALL your lines, going back about 200 years from your birth. It covers all 4 grandparents, all 8 greats, 16 great-greats, etc. Decide what test you want before worrying about your cousins (unless you have an 80 or 90 year old relative - get their DNA!!). And if you can't decide, go with Family Finder. Cheri, I want to ask you some questions just to make sure I understand the difference of what results I would get from Family Tree. If I do the Y-DNA I would get the Medeiros line but not the Pereira line since my surname is Medeiros ? If I want to get some info on my Pereira line I would take the Family Finder test ? If I do the mt DNA test I would get my mother's line which is not Azorean Portuguese as far as I know ? Sorry Rick, I misread what you wrote. We have 932 total members (about 928 are unique members - a couple of people goofed when ordering a test). Y-DNA tests: 418 mtDNA tests: 366 Family Finder: 558 This adds up to over 1300 tests, so yes, members have ordered more than one type of DNA test.
