Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching Alexander Souza, São Jorge, 1883

2016-03-18 Thread Cheri Mello
Eric S,

In the obituary it says that he belonged to a Portuguese organization.
You'll need to search those records.

You will have to do all searches on him as Alexander (Alexandre) da Souza,
just Souza, Souza Borba, S. Borba or just Borba. Don't assign anything to
the names. He could have tacked on his grandma's maiden name of Borba for
all you know.

His wife's name would have been Maria Caetano Mancebo.

Here's a bunch of other resources to search to find that freguesia
(village) on Sao Jorge: goo.gl/BhM8Fs

Good luck!

OK, I went in and changed the setting to show maiden name and now it's
attaching the father's surname to each woman that doesn't have a surname
listed! I don't really know what else to do. As an example, my Isabel
Constantina Bettencourt is now being listed by her father's last name of
Lemos.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Jorge baptism records for Rita and Rosa

2016-03-18 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Marilyn, they could possibly be the same *but *the baptism of Rita clearly
is Manuel Joaquim Silveira not Silva. I would question the second baptism
if it looked like an abbreviation of Silveira but it is clearly Silva. You
would need to trace all of Manuel Joaquinuelm's children and see if there
was a change in the surname at some point. I wouldn't assume it is the same
couple unless I had traced Rita's parents children forward and see what is
listed on their marriages. I wouldn't worry about Mom adding the third name
but it may be that there are two couples that had children at the same time
in the village and Manuel changed his name to Silva and Mom added another
name to make sure there was separation between the two couples.
My three Manuel Souzas in Norte Grande did change their name, one kept
Manuel Souza, one added Lemos and the third added another surname to Souza
to show the difference. I've see them change the surname as my Francisco
Jose Souza changed to Francisco Jose Enes so it is possible!
