It is very important to distinguish between adopted and foster children. Adoption ("perfilhacoes") in the Azores is much rarer than it is in the US. However, legal adoptions in the Azores, is a Court process with detailed legal documents. However, information on biological parents, just like in the US, is likely to be sealed. The vast majority of foundlings, if they survived at all, were never adopted. These children were placed "dados a criar" in the care of.as foster children. Hi Eliseu, I've been helping to look for a few names for my cousins maternal ancestors and she has a Joao de Medeiros (born 1902) married to a Maria do Patrocina and another Joao de Medeiros (born 1871) married to a Maria Jose de Andrade. Thanks JR; and you're right--I see the "nh" now. I have an older Portuguese/English dictionary (published in Porto in 1952) that once belonged to my wife's father. I gives the translation as a day laborer. Putting that together with the definitions you provided and it sounds like someone that exchanges a variety of services in order to make profits. I assume you are also right about it being a nickname since occupations don't seem to be given for any other grandparents on the nearby pages.
