[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Trouble Reading Marriage Record
I'm also seeing Manuel Cabral, son of Francisco da Camera and Antonia de Jesus marrying Maria Jose, daughter of José Travassos and Anna Maria (originally wrote Anna Jacinta, then wrote "digo" to correct himself and wrote Anna Maria). You are correct that Anna Maria is deceased. I believe they were both baptized in Fenais da Luz where the groom met his last three Lenten obligations, but the bride only met her last one there. She was disobligated the other two years in São Sebastião so she may have been baptized there. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Centro de Conhecimento dos Açores - Registos Paroquiais
Ancestry Carolina do Rego Born in Sao Vicente Ferreira, Sao Miguel Acores. Parents: Manuel do Rego Araujo & Maria do R Faulha ( although in her birth record it states her mother's name as Maria Estrella) Carolina immigrated to the USA in 1879 along with her older siblings... Maria do Espírito Santo ( age 27) and her husband Manuel da Costa. They brought their 3 month old son Manuel. Francisca do Rego age 24 Francisca apparently married a José Correa in MA My G grandmother Carolina married my Great grandfather Antonio Bento Torres in 1899 in Fall River. At some point they both returned to Sao Miguel where they had 4 girls and I believe a son. I cannot find death record for her but I know she passed in Sao Miguel. I did find a death record for her sister Maria who passed in 1933 in Sao Vicente. The rest is a mystery to me. According to my mother she said that she had another sister named Isabel in Santo Antonio. I have absolutely no clue if I'm on the right track as I keep finding names mixed up as I go back. It becomes extremely confusing and to me it seems that there were intermarriage say some point. I get a piece of paper and I write: Jose Pacheco Coelho Jose Pacheco Then I make a tally of how many times that name appears, giving more weight to his marriage and his childrens' baptisms (he was most likely present at all of them). I give less weight to the grandchildrens' baptisms (he may not have been there or may have passed away). So if that helps you make a decision, do it that way. If Jose Pacheco Coelho has 8 tallies and Jose Pacheco is 2, then it helps. However, with compounded surnames, especially with how common Jose Pacheco is, I think I'd do this: Given/First: Jose Surname/Last: Pacheco Coelho (It will be alphabetized under the Ps though). Then in the note field for the marriage, I would put that he married as Jose Pacheco Coelho, in the kids' baptism I'd put that the father appeared as Jose Pacheco, etc. Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Documenting different names?
Joseph, if you are using Legacy Family Tree there is an 'aka' place to put the name but it doesn't show on the front or 'primary' page. What I did, was to take off the 'christening' field and rename it the also-known-as field and it will show me right on the primary info page that Domingos Antonio Souza is aka Domingos Antonio Soares and also Domingos Antonio (as they sometime 'lose' the surname in later records, just a lazy Priest, I thing!). I put the christening date in my notes but it isn't something that I have to see to identify my guy but an 'aka' certainly is more valuable to me!! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Attending the Azores Conference and Joao Ventura
Joao has been my primary resource collecting information and documents about my grandparents and my husband's grandparents for almost 20 years. I can't tell you how often he has found someone that has been "hidden" behind the "walls" that sometimes occur while we are searching church records. In addition, Joao met me on the continent while he was at the University of Coimbra and went with me to the remote village where my grandfather was born and to the different places records were kept at that time. I agree with all that has been stated about his skills and add that he has a wonderful personality too! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Documenting different names?
Thank you Celeste. My program also has other names but I don't think they come up on search. Besides, I was thinking more along the lines of what to assign as the person's primary name. Sometimes I'm not sure and was wondering if there was a methodology to doing it. [AZORES-Genealogy] writing on back of old photo
Hi Becky, I emailed copies of the photos to my mom (85 in May!) who is bilingual in English and Portuguese and who taught herself to read and write Portuguese (she's awesome :) This is her interpretation: "Este é meu retrato" (This is my picture. In other words, this is a picture of me) "que tirei no meu" yard (my Mom thinks she's trying to write "yard" in English and is spelling it how it sounded to her, "yarne") "atras faço vinha" (behind-- the house, that is; in other words, in the back yard-- I make a vineyard). "uma velha" (an old lady). This is a picture of me taken in my yard. In back, I make a vineyard. [signed] an old lady :) Linda -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Centro de Conhecimento dos Açores - Registos Paroquiais
re: Manuel do Rego Nunes. As luck would have it, I have been researching this line for a number of years. These people are the descendants of the Rego Mirandas of Somerset, MA. I have the line going back to 1693. I know all of this because I have spent the last 20 years researching the Miranda families of S. Miguel.
