I believe this is an older spelling of "mareante" and it means the same as 
"marinheiro".  This is a sailor or seaman.

I've come across this title (?) with several people in the same family.  I 
looked up "Mariante" in google.  It's like Naval special forces.  
Is this what it meant back in those days??!

Susanne, here's a summed up one for you.

on the 17th day of the month of July of the year 1892 in this Matrix parish
of Nossa Senhora da Estrela council of Ribeira Grandean individual
of the female sex was born whom I named Dilia, that was born in this parish
at 10 am on the 14th day of the month of June of the current year.
Ligitimate daughter of Manuel China da Camara, coachman (bolieiro), and
Maria da Conceicao, housewife, naturals of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao of
this parish, married (recebidos) in this parish and residing (moradores)
in Cova do Milho.  Paternal and Maternal incognito grandparents.  (this
means both parents were orphans) Godparent, Manuel Carreiro Junior, single
and Godmother Maria da Estrela, widow, whom I know to be the proper…


Margin Notes:

N.o 1 – Got married with Manuel dos Santos, 24 years old, natural of the
Matrix parish (N. Sra. da Estrela) son of Antonio dos Santos and Jacinta da
Gloria, in this Conservatory (means civil registry) on 3-Dec-1911 registry
31-57 of 1911; widowed the same in the referred parish on the 15th day
registry of obits no. 128 on 16-April-1965.


Below is a note on her identification booklet (cedula) issued on 14-Oct-1930


N.o 2 – Firmed up (fechou) the name Delia da Conceicao in accordance of her
booklet (caderneta) number 57 of 1911 on the 17th of June 1983.


Boklet number 552 115 on  the 17th of June 1983


N.o 3 - Passed away (faleceu) on the 14th of May of 1985; in this parish –
Matrix of this council , by the obit no. 88 on the 14th day of May 1985.
