[AZORES-Genealogy] History of Faial, mid-1700s

2016-11-02 Thread Cheri Mello
Repost for mufflevski at gmail.com

Hello, I'm very interested in the history of Faial during the mid 1700s.
Our Rocha family lived there (Flamengos and Horta) during that time. We
think they may have been in the military (because they moved frequently).
This would have been after the Portuguese Restoration war which ended in
1668. Can anyone tell me what was occurring during the 1700s particularly
in Faial? (I know also the great tidal wave of Lisbon swept through in
1775. Our family was there at that time as well).

2016-11-02 Thread luiznoia .
I have searched all the Mass. birth and marriage records there and at
Familysearch.
No suspects there.

Her brother Henry showed Boston as his birthplace , but that can't be found
either.

Thank you Eric, for this and your other message. This is certainly more
validation to add to her history, and I thank you for the research! Now if
I can just figure out who her parents were and where she was born I might
be able to fill in her branch of my tree. They are my brick wall. Family
lore is that Maria was born in Boston, but I've not been able to find any
record of her birth there. Thanks again for your help!

Bom dia Diane,

Google "Guerra da Restauração".
Soldados pagos had a legal contract, this was their profession during that time
of períod (that's why some ran off). Mercenaries also existed, but belonged to
another rank.

Hi,

Recently while searching baptism records on CCA for Flamengos in the early
1700s, I am seeing a lot of records showing the father’s occupation as “soldado
pago” which Google translates to paid soldier. Does this mean “mercenary” or
does it have some other meaning? Someone suggested that it means a soldier who
serves for 8 years.

Any ideas.
