Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Can you tell me what this means

2016-12-18 Thread LouieLouieOhOh
Linda,

Is it possible for the link below to be Sabinas Mom and Dad?

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-RIBEIRASECA-C-1822-1849/SJR-CH-RIBEIRASECA-C-1822-1849_item1/P4.html

It is the only Pascoal I have been able to find before Sabinas baptism
(1831) in Ribeira Seca.

Thanks for these. I've not ever researched in Santa Maria and they are a little
bit different and the names are foreign to me so getting used to it all.
funny how each place is just a bit different and seems each decade is different

Thanks again

Hi Liz

He was baptised on the 8 of December of 1895

Line 8 of the record indicates that he was born in the village around 10 hours
of
Line 9 the morning on the 12 day of the month of October of
Line 10 the current year (1895)
It does not say if he is the first or second of that name

Mother's name is Filomena da Ressurreicao Coelho.  The first part of her middle
name is on line 11:  Res and the remainder is at the beginning of the next line
12:  surreicao.

The notes on the left are about his marriage and his death.  I can't make out
the whole note but note one:  he was married to Virginia de Conceicao (?) on
the 2 of January 1921.
Note 2:  He died in the village of  Villa of Porto on the 28 day August Obit No
44 of the current year 1945

Hope this helps some.  Sorry,  I couldn't make out the rest of the names, but
I am sure others can and will do so.

My Great Grandfather is Anthony Faria Emma and Manuals son. My mom Lisa Faria
said that Emma did alot on her own because Manual walked out or left them. I
never heard of him dying but the family grew up very poor.

My mom said that Emma was very kind and had a sign she would hang outside that
said warm food. She cooked a ton and fed the community. I just spent the last
hour trying to figure out who was Doris and Dolores I couldn't find any record
for Dolores just Doris.

Have you tried searching for Antone P. Faria? It's spelt
Antonio/Antone/Anthony. Born around 1860 he is Manuals older brother I believe.
Stay in contact with me please!

Best of luck!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with a record from Matriz de Sao Miguel, Vila Franco do Campo

2016-12-18 Thread JR
Manuel Rodrigues was born- 06 Jan 1654; Ursula de Melo or Gonsalves was
born- 02 Mar 1664. Parents marriages are lost in missing pages of Vila
Franca, bet 1653-1658.

Who are your ancestors before this marriage?

I think this may be Francisco Caetano Furtado cc Antonia Jacinta [or de
Jesus] in Ponta Garca, Dec 18- 1808, page pg 178. He is filho de Caetano
Furtado [Roia] and Felicia Rosa Melo; she is filha de Antonio Rego Barbosa
and Constancia Rosa de Jesus.

That's so true, Liz, each island has names that are more true to their
island than to all. You might want to look at that center part of the
Portuguese Paleography where is lists the given and surnames. Sometimes you
can find the name there and at least get close to the correct
name/spelling! See you in January.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with a record from Matriz de Sao Miguel, Vila Franco do Campo

2016-12-18 Thread 'Altino' via Azores Genealogy
Hi everyone,

I was hoping i could get some help in terms deciphering the names of the
parents of a couple from a marriage record in Vila Franco do Campo.

The record is on the top left page, here:

p://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-VF-SAOMIGUEL-C-1670-1705/SMG-VF-SAOMIGUEL-C-1670-1705_item1/P43.html

>From what i can make out, the couple getting married is Manuel Rodrigues
(Roiz) and Ursula de Mello.

HIs parents: Sebastiao (?) Roiz (deceased) and Catherina (not sure if that
is a surname after her first name or if it reads as defunto)
Her Parents: Manuel (Ferreira ?) and Manria de Mello

(Does anyone know what the word after his surname is ?)

Thanks for your help.

2016-12-18 Thread linda
Well, the first glaring error is that the date should be 18*3*1-- I thought
I'd fixed that, but no.

:)

funny how each place is just a bit different and seems each decade is

There is no mention of “Fredona” but there is a reference to “faja redonda” in
the context of where the house where Jose died.

I'm going through all the baptisms now trying to figure out which is
her name and where the priest had too much vinho. I would *think* that
she'd be Felicissima and that the priest just wrote the shorter name.
Felicia is used more than Felicissima.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: 1836 Baptism in Ribeira Quente on Sao Miguel island (way too much vinho)

2016-12-18 Thread Cheri Mello
Do you have anything on this Antonia de Jesus, wife of Francisco Furtado?
Why was Catarina there? (Duh, to have her baby). Why them? Women are
usually in labor for several hours. I would *think* she'd be at the house
of her sister or sister-in-law, but it could be anybody. I've got the goods
on Catarina Jacinta and her hubby Victorino Bento Vieira or Victorino
Vieira. Trying to figure out this Antonia de Jesus angle.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Felicissima or Felicisima

Margaret,

In this case she looks like she's the same woman.

Here's her marriage (left side) She's Felicia:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-RIBEIRAQUENTE-C-1833-1860/SMG-PV-RIBEIRAQUENTE-C-1833-1860_item1/P52.html

Here's kid #1, Francisco on the right. She's Felicissima:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-RIBEIRAQUENTE-B-1849-1859/SMG-PV-RIBEIRAQUENTE-B-1849-1859_item1/P8.html

I'm going through all the baptisms now trying to figure out which is her
name and where the priest had too much vinho. I would *think* that she'd be
Felicissima and that the priest just wrote the shorter name. Felicia is
used more than Felicissima.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Felicissima or Felicisima

2016-12-18 Thread Margaret Vicente
Cheri,

Careful, Felicia is another form of the name but it does not mean it is
modern spelling of Felicissima. I may be named Felicissima and my sister
Felicia. Two (2) similar but different names.

Spelling is Felicia.

And the modern spelling for Felecia is Felicia?

I was fixing the spellings in my database. After a while I don't know if
I'm reading in Portuguese or English anymore. Now that it's the morning,
Felicia looks right to me, but I think that's how it's spelled in English.

Another reason abbreviations are bad. I don't remember ever seeing a key or
legend on the CITCEM site that explains the abbreviations. In books (such
as Rodrigo Rodrigues) there was a page of abbreviations in the front (or
maybe the back) of the published book. I like that!

OK, yes, it's coming back to me. That's what it was... no pai(s)
incognito(s) in the book. I probably over applied the memory to include the
CITCEM. You use it more than me, so you would know that kind of stuff.

Still don't know for sure what freguesia Louie is in and I'm going off to

Louie,

Before you actually get to this page, assuming you're the one going through the
process as opposed to someone simply sending you a link to this one page, there
will be a page with a slew of flags near the top of the page. If you click on
the Union Jack, the subsequent pages will appear in English. It might clear up
the confusion for this record.

If you know this already, then I apologize for taking up your time.

Continued good luck with your research.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Can you tell me what this means

2016-12-18 Thread 'Gayle Machado' via Azores Genealogy
Cheri,

The confusion may stem from the book to database transition. In Amorim's book,
the genealogical info was shown as an appendix. Children of unknown parentage
were not listed. (Only family groups appeared.) Maybe some slipped in, but not
many. The database allowed more fields to be included, so more people were
listed, e.g. a parent born in a different village appears in the database but
not in the appendix. And, they linked up the families in a "friendlier" format
compared to the codes shown in the appendix.

For me, one of the frustrations has been when a person, e.g. father, is listed
but birth is attributed to a different freguesia and then in the records for
that village he is listed as born in the first freguesia or does not appear at
all. In other words, the cross referencing sometimes misses the mark. Which
begs the question "Who messed up ?" The priest ? The transcriber ? Or,
regardless of the person, was it simply a case of too much vinho as you like to
say ?

Ok, it's a bit late for standing on a soap box, so I'll close by wishing you
Happy Holidays.

Take care,

Gayle

No, if he died at sea he wouldn't be recorded as dying in a particular
freguesia because he did not die there. Records at sea are recorded
differently. It wouldn't be in CITCEM.

Read Michael Tepper's "American Passenger Arrival Records" and John P.
Colletta's "They Came in Ships" is you think your ancestor died at sea.
Your public library probably has them.

Thanks Cheri ...

I'll look for his death record ... there is a ship named Fredonia ... maybe
he died at sea?

and the story goes on ...

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Can you tell me what this means

2016-12-18 Thread LouieLouieOhOh

To be honest ... what started me on this particular journey ... was the
baptism record for Sabina (bottom left of this record. She "appears" to be
my 2X Great grandmother.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-NORTEPEQUENO-B-1830-1852/SJR-CH-NORTEPEQUENO-B-1830-1852_item1/P6.html

I think it lists her father as Pascoal Machado Mendonca and mother is
Margarida Rosa ... but I'm confused about the rest of the record from that
point to the end ... my Portuguese is not good so ... I am looking for help.

What does the record say beyond that point?

You are typing "Redonda" and the site says "Fredonda." Which one do you
want?

Redonda means round in Portuguese. Fredonda is not a word. Neither is a
genealogy term.

There's lots of mistakes in CITCEM. You should check the original

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Can you tell me what this means

2016-12-18 Thread Cheri Mello
Gayle, I know they have added some. I know the initial project didn't
really include them. Or maybe it's only some freguesias. I don't utilize
the database that much because I don't have family there. I use it to help
researchers here. So you would know more than I would. I remember in the
beginning they skipped over the "pai incognito" or "pais incognitos." So
you know more than me! So if they include them now, then I stand corrected.
Thanks!

Cheri,

I hate to disagree with you as your track record is so good, but there are
children without fathers listed. Maybe not all are listed. In fact, some are
listed without either parent as in the case of expostos.

At least, in the records for Pico where I did my research.

Cheri,

Yes, I saw errors too ... lots of them ... that is beside my question
because I am verifying each of my family members with baptism, marriage,
death, etc. on the CCA site.

I was being specific about the term "rs/Redonda". Is that not a genealogy
term? If not and you know someone here (that belongs to this group) who was
involved with the research, might she know the term?

No big deal ... just wondering if Redonda is a ship and he might have died
at sea?

Remember, I'm a geneology noobie ... and a 62 year old adult. :')
