[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Name of the parish and island

2017-02-18 Thread linda
Hi Suzanne,

If I read the record rightly, it says this:

Antonio Francisco Duarte was baptised and ...[discharged of his lenten
obligations]... at the Parish Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, City
of Horta
Anna Luiza, [is a] native of the Parish Matriz Church do Santissimo
Salvador of the same City [Horta] where [she] the bride was baptised,
additionally she was... [discharged of her lenten obligations]... in the
above said Parish of S.a da Luz [Flamengos]

hope that helps,

:)

Linda

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Faria from the Azores

2017-02-18 Thread Sami
Edna, YES! I'm still trying to figure out that too! I was sure it was from
Antonio Pereira de Faria and up that line, but now I don't know since
Manuel was really a Goulart and on his mother's side, do Coracao de Jesus!
His godfather was Manuel Silveira de Faria- I'm assuming that's who he was
named after.

Sam, Angela did give the right info.

You posted your reading as Jan 8 *1903,* since the day was correct, she
corrected the year to 1803.

The baptism date is Jan 16th

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Records of São Matheus, ponta Delgada

2017-02-18 Thread Margaret Vicente
Maria Elena,

Like John said, it was a hospital and the only one in Ponta Delgada with
one other of the same name in Ribeira Grande.

It was not all charity as each patient had to apply and be approved for
free or partial paid treatment which was being subsidized by legacy (s).

Many of the rich that died willed all or part of their estate to The Santa
Casa. One of my ancestors gave the land and built the church twice where
people who died at the hospital were buried.

Presently is being used as a retirement home. A new hospital was build
north of there.

Enjoy your trip.

It was a charity hospital much like a hospice. My great grandmother died there.
It used to be located in the old Franciscan convent right next door to the S.
Jose/S. Mateus church in Ponta Delgada. It has also been located in other
places as well, but in the same vicinity.

Because the Parish grew quickly a bigger church was built to the east of the S.
Mateus church, in the Campo de Sao Francisco ( S. Francisco's square) situated
on the north side of the hospital, Santa Casa da Misericordia. The new church
was initially named Santa Clara and later renamed Sao Jose.  You will find
records mentioning all these three churches.
Sao Mateus records were moved to the new church of Santa Clara, later called
Sao Jose and remaining as such to present day.

have one ancestor who died in the Casa de Misericórdia (or was buried there).
