[AZORES-Genealogy] Mount Carmel in New Bedford, Massachusetts

2017-03-25 Thread Cheri Mello
I called and emailed the church secretary at Mount Carmel in New Bedford 2
months ago. I requested a marriage and specified that I really needed the
information that said where the bride and groom were born. She never
fulfilled my request.

So is anyone going there who can ask Fr. Oliveira to look up the marriage
in the book and read it to you while you take notes? Email me and I'll
provide the particulars. I don't need 5 people all asking them the same
thing.

Thanks, Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Searching Soares/Menezes on San Miguel Island in late 1800's

2017-03-25 Thread Neil Teixeira
If any of the Sao Miguel born children (Maria 12, Antonio 10, Maria 8,
Maria 1) were eventually married in the Catholic Church in the USA? *The
location-the village *and confirmation of their Baptism (s) should have
been recorded in the (boiler plate) marriage record book by the Priest.
Priest were to confirm by letter that the bride & groom had indeed-been
baptisied. That's how I discovered my family's (long lost) village on Sao
Miguel island.

2017-03-25 Thread 'Julzzy66' via Azores Genealogy
I was responding to Mara about Victoria's baptism record. here it is below.
I do know they immigrated around 1905 and noticed that on her record i see
a date but can not make out the words before the date to know if that is
what they are talking about.

I have no idea what record you are talking about or for who.

Margin notes state that a certificate was issued. They never say why.
Otherwise, we'd have all of our tree problems solved.

The record you posted was a marriage of a Jose d' Arruda in 1855. This one
(bottom right) is a baptism of a different Jose d' Arruda the same year in
the same place. It also seems to be the same Jose d' Arruda in the 1884
marriage in your Mar 20 post that Margaret translated for you.

[AZORES-Genealogy] New to Group Silva (Pico) and Avila (Sao Jorge) families

2017-03-25 Thread Kellie Crnkovich
I found this group after joining the Azores FTDNA project I am in the process
of awaiting family finder results in next few weeks. As my mtDNA is not Azores
related since my mothers father was the line. He was born in Alameda County,
California his christened name Anthony Bernard Silva. His father Manuel Perry
Silva came to California in 1870 from the Azores (per Grandpa from Pico) with 2
brothers (I believe Antone and Joseph per census records). In 1890 a bride was
sent from the Azores Marianna Avila (I have gotten many generations of her
Family). Years ago a cousin from Sao Jorge helped me with her genealogy. I am
stuck on Manuel though trying to find his correct Silva family. Hoping family
finder will help. Grandpa was older when my mom was born and passed away when I
was 7. I was very close with as he lived with us.

This is what I have.
193. MANUEL PERRY SILVA (Anthony's father) was born in July 1846, in Pico,
Azores, to Mr. Silva231 and Ms. Silva232. In 1870, aged about 23, he immigrated
to according to 1900 census came to U.S. in 1870. He was recorded in the census
in 1880, aged about 33, in Washington, Alameda, California, USA. In 1900, aged
about 53, he was a Listed as saloon keeper. Manuel was a Farmer. He was
recorded in the census in 1900, aged about 53, in Emeryville city, Alameda,
California, USA. Manuel died on 25 February 1917, aged 70, in Alameda, CA.
Manuel was buried in Holy Spirit Cemetery, 5250 Central Ave, Fremont, CA.

I would love to find more about his family and where they came from. I can't
wait to meet more Avila and Silva family out there. I also have a site at
MyHeritage.com that family can join in and add new info to the tree.

Thank you,

Mary, those numbers after the H look like a mutation designation at marker
16,129 G (guanine) was replaced by A (adenine). I have a lot more
mutations than just one and would think that you would also. I wonder why
they included that in your haplogroup designation.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Searching Soares/Menezes on San Miguel Island in late 1800's

2017-03-25 Thread Cheri Mello
Staci,

For your records, the island is Sao Miguel, one of the Azores. San Miguel
is an island off the coast of California.

You have names and dates, but need a specific place. For more how to, go to
the Azores GenWeb here: https://goo.gl/vOijK0

The outbound ships lists from Sao Miguel to Hawaii are lost. In "Portuguese
Immigants to Hawaii" compiled by Edgar C. Knowlton, Jr. on page 415, for
the Swanley, Dec. 12, 1909, it says:
69) Manuel I. Menezes, 35
70) Thereza, 26
71) Maria, 12
72) Antonio, 10
73) Maria C, 8
74) Maria 1

Find out which one of those people naturalized. The one who leaves the
biggest paper trail is where you are most likely to find an answer.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Searching Soares/Menezes on San Miguel Island in late 1800's

2017-03-25 Thread SNarducci07
I've just recently started researching my families genealogy. Most lineages
I can trace back pretty far, but my father's maternal line stops at my 2nd
great-grandparents who are from San Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. I have
a decent amount of information but lack the know-how and skills to really
know what to do next. I would love to get the names of my 3rd
great-grandparents. My 2nd great-grandparents are Theresa Soares Menezes
(Soares is her married Surname I do believe), I've seen she signed her name
as Thereza J. Menezes as well, she is also known as Maria Theresa Soares
and was born January 1, 1883, on San Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. Her
husband was Manuel Soares Menezes born about June 1875 on San Miguel Island
as well. They were married on that island at about 1897. They had 4 kids
born in San Miguel; Mary Theresa Soares, Antone Soares, Constance Soares,
and Minnie Soares (my great-grandmother). They then immigrated to Honolulu
on the S.S. Swanley and arrived on December 14th, 1909. They had 2 more
children in Hawaii; Evelyn and Ann Soares. They then moved to California
and had one more child John Soares. They continued living in San Jose,
Santa Clara County, California until they both passed away. I only have the
date of Theresa Soares death and not Manuel's. Is there any way to find the
names of either of their parents? I have 2 sources claiming the surnames
Fernandez (Theresa's father) and Jesus (Theresa's mother, though I know
this is likely a religious name and not a surname), I have no information
for Manuel's parents.
Thank you!

 Hi All,
Well, I need some help with this marriage. It is for my 6th & 7th greats.

26 Jun 1686 in Calheta, bottom left then on to top right:
Joao Teixeira son of Francisco Gonzalves Teixeira and his wife Maria Lucas
to Barbara Pereira daughter of Dominguez Fernandez?? Caresma could have
wound up Quaresma? not a name I'm familier with at all, and his wife
 Izabel ???, who is dead.

 Here is the link:

Any help would be appreciated. My Joao Teixeira adds the Surname Ferro to
his name as the children are born. He is also an official ferreiro
 (blacksmith).

[AZORES-Genealogy] FTDNA- mtDNA changes

2017-03-25 Thread Joseph Mendonca
I just received an email from FTDNA announcing some changes with its mtDNA
testing. As of yet I haven't noticed any changes to my haplogroup (H).
Has anyone here noticed any changes?
