That's a typed transcription from 1981. Do you have the original? It's
probably handwritten in the book you mentioned. Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joao da Souza born 1847, Ponta Delgada (no island specified)

2018-05-05 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Joy,

The title of the book explains a lot. "Registration Book MUNICIPALITY of
Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal." That would have to be Sao Miguel island.
The other Ponta Delgada on Flores island is not a "municipality" (concelho)
but a freguesia (village) in the concelho of Santa Cruz. It would still be
nice to see a scan of this, just for curiosity sake.

On the island of Sao Miguel, there are 6 Registo Civil (Civil Registry) -
what you could call a town hall. They have records there from about 1915 to
the present. They are not a research facility though. You are in a time
period though that you don't need the Civil Registry. The older records are
over at the Arquivo e Biblioteca. It's located on the top floor. They will
sit you down and put you on the computer to view the records which you can
do right now. Tombo.pt/en Stay in the left column and click on Azores,
then Sao Miguel, then Ponta Delgada, then Rosto de Cao. I think someone
said you wanted the Sao Roque church. So pick that record set.

How to read the records is here: https://goo.gl/4Tzc2i

You can go to the church in Sao Roque and see it. And you can wander the
streets. The chance of finding tombstones are slim to none. After 7 years,
the graves are reused and the bones places in a ossuary. Some older
tombstones and markers exist. Families pay a fee every year to keep family
interred. It's very doubtful to find a family paying for the interment of
family from 200 years ago.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Joao da Souza born 1847, Ponta Delgada (no island specified)

2018-05-05 Thread Peter O'Shea
Cheri

The Register of Birth is the translated document from the department of Ethnic
Affairs Commission in Australia. The registration is Paragraph 141 of
registration book Municipality of Porta Delgada Azores Portugal.

I will be travelling to Lisboa then on to Ponta Delgada Sao Miguel Azores in
September. I would assume there is a town hall, church or similar where I can
find information to visit areas of the district he lived, grave stones of
parents etc.

Unfortunately I have no Portuguese language but may have a source who can
assist with some translation.

Many thanks for the update.

Joy,
I don't know what you mean by the register at birth. The Azores uses baptismal
records. There are a few nascimentos for non-Catholics. Those are online too.
Maybe you should provide a link to this document that you speak of so we can
see what you are talking about, as you are not giving us all the information.
Yes, your researcher translated it wrong. There's no such place as Lagoas
anywhere in the Azores.
When you get "there?" There as in where? The Azores? I don't know what island
you are going to. That question was never answered, so I can't provide any type
of advice.

Thanks again Cheri. I don’t have any baptism details at this stage. As for
Lagoas that was what was on the Register of Birth. Maybe the person
translating this register misspelt it. Do you have any sites I can visit, or
places to visit when I get there for such information? Being such a “common”
name it may prove difficult?
I know he came to Australia in 1869 after “voyaging in the southern waters on a
whaling ship. However at this stage I’m more interested in the Azores area to
look for his family there etc.

I’ll search further over the weekend.

Hi Joy,
Glad you found something. What was your island for the baptism of your Joao?
The district archive of Angra covers all 9 of the Azores islands.
Also, there's no place called "Lagoas" on Pico. There's no place called
"Lagoas" at all in the Azores. There's a Lagoa, but that's over on the island
of Sao Miguel. The only place with an "L" on Pico is Lajes. Hope that is what
you meant. Cheri

Thank you for your information.

I now have a Register of Birth which specifies the name Joao de Sousa born 27
May 1847. Place of birth Ponta Delgada – District of Angra (Azores –
Portugal). Father’s name Jose de Sousa born Ponta Delgada. Mother Tereza De
Jesus born Lagoas da Ilha do Pico.

I will check the websites you and others have forwarded to me. Much appreciate
your assistance.

Joy,

There's a Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island and another on Flores island.

On both islands, Ponta Delgada can refer to the city itself, or the
county/province.

Since you believe you have the birth date, search the baptisms on line at the
Azores government site, the CCA. Start with the city itself, then move to the
other churches outside the city, but within the council (county/province).

https://tombo.pt/en/d/acores

Pick the island from the left column, then the council of Ponta Delgada, then
start looking for every Joao born on 25 May 1847.
If you need maps as you expand your search, go to the Azores Gen Web here:
http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/maps-churches-and-villages/

Good luck, Cheri Mello
