[AZORES-Genealogy] Partitioning a MAC

2018-11-26 Thread Gordon soares
Could Kathy Cardoza tell me what it costs to get a license from Microsoft after
partitioning my MAC? I’m assuming I have to do that before I can download any
computer program that is not a MAC.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree DNA Sale: Fri, Nov. 23 - Mon, Nov. 26, 2018

2018-11-26 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, IslandRoutes)

TODAY, Monday, November 26, at 11:59 p.m. PST is the last chance to order
at these sales prices. Here's the original email:
==
Family Finder is now $39!!! That's the lowest price EVER! They have
knocked $3 off of shipping and handling, so it's $9.95 (all this is USD).
It appears that the other sales prices have remained the same:

If you are an existing FTDNA customer, log into your DNA page with your kit
number and password. They will pull your sample and get to work. No
additional S&H charges.

If you are new to DNA testing, or ordering a DNA kit for someone who has
never tested at FTDNA, order here:

Azores: https://goo.gl/dtAs4j
Madeira: https://goo.gl/JVBLJV
Cape Verde: https://goo.gl/eYWXXw

Feel free to email with any questions you may have.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] uploading gedcom to ftdna

2018-11-26 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I noticed the same thing on Saturday when I went through the drill of linking a
person on my father’s tree. The relationship did not show up when I went to the
FF matches. I just checked this morning and it is the same – no relationship
but they are linked up. The estimated relationship is 3rd to 5th cousin.

Hi Doreen, I just found a match on one of my trees and worked it through. Once
you get the person you match on your tree by any of the methods discussed
earlier. Close the tree and reopen your tree. You will then have a DNA match
box on the left with the cousin’s name and a purple thing in a circle. Another
Purple circle thing on the right above the + - buttons. In the search box enter
the name of your cousin and when his name appears in the dropdown click it and
he will appear in the tree on the center of the tree. He should have a Purple
circle thing if you click it another box will open and ask if you want to link
it go ahead and link and now It should be linked.

Ok, I don’t think you are given a choice on the relationship, you just link to
your tree and the tree gives the relationship. Did you try dragging the name
in the box to the name that matches in your tree?

Is this your tree? As a project admin I only have limited access to it and

There are some problems with the FTDNA tree. I have entered a person on the

happened on several cousins. I have even tried deleting the person and
reentering the lineage and the person. Even with that method it does not work.
Also you must be careful because if you have other cousin related to you
through this line you may have just deleted that connection. It is not very
user friendly. On cousin that are related to me several difference ways I have
resorted to entering just the closest connection. Even this this method it

 Hi All Listers,

Just a reminder to everyone when helping out beginners with their
 genealogy:
 1. State where the record was found
 2. State how they can find it also, a url or from Ancestry.com or
 FamilySearch.org etc.

Most people starting to trace Portuguese family have no idea that their
family name could be entirely different than what they are now using! You
remember what a shock it was to find that your Sweazy ansestor was Sousa
Soares! They probably have never even heard Portuguese spoken so have no
idea what their 'real' name could even be in the Azores.
Just reminding everyone to try and be specific in their guidance.

It's been said over and over that the current tree system on FTDNA is lame. It
was designed by a gamer (FTDNA bought out another company and this employee
came with the buyout). He did not consult genealogists nor did he follow Gedcom
format. That first admin conference, the poor fellow just kept going from admin
to admin saying "Isn't there anything you like?" He left the company and they
brought in a guy who used to work for Dell. I sat down with him and so did
Kathy Fernandes. So did many other admins. He took lots of notes and
screenshots and was going to build the new trees on Gedcom format. That was 2
years ago. One year ago, (last year's admin conference) they showed us what the
trees were going to be like. They would be coming "soon" but then Europe
implemented the General Data Privacy Regulation, and since FTDNA sells in
Europe, they had to make their web site compliant. They did not have the
conference this month. They moved it to March. If I email them, I'm sure I
would get an answer of "soon." It's much easier to get the point across at the
conference. Bennett (or Max) will read the question (or suggestion) and admins
will clap or say something, so they get the point. Two features on FTDNA came
from this Azores list. I brought them to the conference and the other admins
wanted it too. So do the best you can with the trees for now and I'll let you
know in March what is going on.  Cheri

Rick, I already added the whole line with my 4th cousin in it but; when I click
on her to “add relationship” it doesn’t include cousins of any degree.

You just cannot add a 5th Cousin. You have to have the family tree from that
5th Cousin connecting to a common ancestor in your tree first. This requires
you to upload a revised family tree.

Well, I’ve never used the search box on FTDNA

That is how it works normally but in some cases with some of the profiles I
manage it never shows up on the list of matches. The person shows up in the
tree and they are linked but the relationship between the two people does not
show up on the web page with the list of matches. It has been that way for
months. Also it is not a distant match either. It just does not work in some
cases.

As a project admin I only have limited access to it and
cannot see a problem from my end.

There are some problems with the FTDNA tree. I have entered a person on the
tree then on the list of matches it does not show the relationship. This has
happened on several cousins.
Even this this method it
still does not show some of the relationships on the match list page.

Ok’ It has been a while since I have done it but, go to your page and open your
family tree. Look in the box on the left side and find your 5th cousin’s name.
Then go into the tree and find your 5th cousin and put it in view next to the
box, Then drag your cousin’s name from the box and put in on his name in the
tree. That should then show your 5th cousin as a match.

Well, I’ve never used the search box on FTDNA before.  Didn’t even realize it
was there.  Ok, I found the person I want to add a relationship for.  She is my
4th cousin but; when I click on add relationship the only choices I see are
father, mother, sibling, spouse, son or daughter.  How do I add 5th cousin?

Sorry to be so slow on this and thanks very much for your help,
