Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Silva, Viera, Silveira in Gloucester, Massachusetts

2011-02-11 Thread Deanna Enos
When we were in Piadade, Pico we met a Viera family and have stayed in
contact with her, although she lives in St. Jorge now. I'm sure we could
get some documents on her family, though it may not be the same since your
ancesters were from Faial. Faial is just a short ferry away from Pico.

Did anyone in your Massachusetts family go into the violin making business?

My maiden name is Peters, but my father's ancesters came from Candalaria
Pico Azores and while there they had the name Pedro Faria Des Neves. When
they came to this country they changed the name to Peters as there were too
many people settled in the Sacramento area with Neves. Sorry not to be of

It is amazing how when you start to look at this it all becomes a jumble of
names My father's father Paredas Faria des Neves
From Candalaria. My husbands father was Joseph Enos but born in the United

without documentation it can mean little to locate people by name. Mary was
such a popular name as well. Lionel Holmes seems to be a very reputable

Yes, Eric, Antonio Silveira Bettencourt was Thomas's brother. Rosalina
Augusta of Piedade, Pico was their mother perhaps not Silveira at all. I
only knew her first name from my grandfather. Unfortunately I never asked
him more. My Grandmother Mary Brun came to the USA to marry one of the
brothers and she choose Thomas. She learned to sew at Roalinas house when
she was a girl. Thomas was much older, but she liked him.

2010-12-28 Thread Deanna Enos
These names are not familiar to me. My husband,s father was Clarence Enos
and his grandfather Joseph Enos of Paintersville. Joseph married Katie Nash
and we know where they are buried. My husband and I met in college and did
not know when we met that our ancesters came from the same island Pico and
the same village Piedade. That was really quite a shock. His grandmother
was Porto and she knew my grandmother Mary Brun while they were on the
island.
My name was changed from Neves on my father's side to Peters because there
were too many Neves. His ancesters came from Candalaria and were
Neves's. I had thought I would explore my mother's side Bettencourt and
Brun first to locate anything concrete about them. Did you find out who
Antone Silveira Bettencourt's Father was? That is our question now?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family stories

2010-12-27 Thread Deanna Enos
I'm sure we can get off in a tangent with all this information out there now
but I was very excited that you found Rosalina Silviera in the baptismal
records in Piedade. I do know my grandfather was Thomas S. Bettencourt (S
for Silveira). I do know that his mother was called Senora Rosalina because
he told me. I do know she lived in Piedade all her life in the house that
is still there. That I know for sure. I know the date of his birth and
death. Where he was born and where he died. from our family records. I
would like to know who his mother's parents were and if she lived with
them. I would like to know for sure if my grandfather was John Bettencourt
of the Nossa Senora da Piedade parish and if there are records on him. I
don't know if you can help me Eric with any of this. Thanks. Deanna

2010-12-27 Thread Deanna Enos
Katherine, Perhaps Thomas Bettencourt is related to Urbano Bettencourt.
Thomas was born in Piadade in 1867 and died in California USA in 1954. I'm
trying to get a confirmation of some sort on his mother and father. I do
have a picture of his father, but am unsure of his first name. no dates.
Rosalina Silviera was his mother I think but am still trying to get
information to confirm that. My grandfather told me his mother was called
Senora Rosalina and that is how I know that. According to a recent
notification to me from a baptismal record there is only one Rosalina
Silviera in Piadade. I am thinking if the dates match up it is probably
her. Tell you friend Urbino that I also write and perhaps we have a family
connection. I live in Folsom, California USA. perhaps he knows about the
people of an earlier time.
Any information you can get from him would be much appreciated. Thanks
Katherine.

Yes, Eric. Thomas is her son. I have found that he was born Dec 22, 1867.
in Piadade, Pico. That must be her. Rosalina was his mother. What was the
name of her Silviera parents? What dates are on the baptismal records. Was
she baptized in the Catholic Nossa Senora da Piadade church? or was that
even built then?

Thanks Cheri, for all the information. I have to go cook dinner now so
will get back to this. What a journey! I don't know if I am ready for
this. My mother has told me many stories about the family and I want to get
those down, before I forget them. This country to me is the United States.
Ryde, California is where Thomas Bettencourt settled when he came from the
Azores. Thanks again.

Thanks Eric but I'm not sure of how your information might connect
Jose Silveira 1761-1811 and Maria Conceicao 1765 - 1857 . You have
record of Rosalina Conceicao. In my mind, I can't fit that all
together. It sounds like dates are all important here and I can see

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family stories

2010-12-26 Thread Deanna Enos
Thanks Cheri, Rosalina Silveira would be my Great Grandmother. The mother
of my Grandfather Thomas S. Bettencourt. I'm going to have to search more
for dates. I am guessing she lived around 1792 , but how do I get that
information. I am a complete novice here. I even need to search for the
birth of my Grandfather and his death. I believe Thomas's father was
Father John Bettencourt oriiginally from France
to the island. of Pico. I do have a photo of him. He was a priest.
My Grandfather loved him dearly and always said he was a very kind man. I
believe Thomas had four siblings who all came to this country. I have
visited the house where Senora Rosilina lived. It was then owned by a man
named Freitas. They invited us in for wine and sweetbread. It was
lovely. That is all I know about that side of the family.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family stories

2010-12-26 Thread Deanna Enos
I have just located this group online and I am hoping it will help me
to write some of my family stories. My children would love to have
them written down, and so this year I shall begin.

My Grandfather and Grandmother both came from Piadade, Pico, and I am
trying to get some information on a Senora Rosalina Silveida, whose
house still remains on a hill in Piadade. Anyone know of her?
