[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Great passenger lists on ancestry.com

2011-05-23 Thread Ginger

Can you tell me why there is a 20 year gap in the passenger records on
Ancestry.com?My Portuguese ancestors came to the USA during the
late 1870's and the 1880's. I need their arrival info to help
break my brick wall.It would also give me the names of any
siblings, or other relatives, who arrived with them. Names that I do
not presently know.

Does the FLC have copies of those passenger lists that are NOT on
Ancestry? Please don't tell me that 20 years of Manifests have been
'lost' or destroyed, like the 1890 Census had been.

This is a great collection. But as E said the index is far from

It's just important to keep in mind the fact that there is valuable
information in the lists that may be impossible to find through the index.

The names are often spelled completely wrong. Also, the devotional names
of the women (de Jesus, do Rosario, etc) are sometimes indexed as the
children's surnames. And while the de/do/da is sometimes combined with
the last name, Ancestry's search engine is usually good about
recognizing this problem, and for example, searches for Costa will
turn up Costa, Decosta, and Dacosta results.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Great passenger lists on ancestry.com

2011-05-23 Thread Ginger
Elaine,

I used the link in Susanne's post, and what I read does seem to
indicate that there is a gap in the records, but here is some info:
My G-Grandmother's name was Maria Vieira from Fayal and arrived at one
of the East Coast ports. She (possibly her husband) and the children
would have arrived between 1883 and 1887.The ancestors who arrived
in the late 1870's I'll put in another post.

I don't know if Maria arrived with the children, or if her husband
accompanied her on the voyage.I believe his name, as well as his
son's name was Joaquim Vieira. According the the USA records I've
found, the son, Joaquim, was born in 1882 on Fayal. The son later
used the name Joseph in the USA.I do not know the names of Maria
and Joaquim Senior's other children. The destroyed 1890 Census
would have given me that info and I would have been able to research
the family line through them.

The family settled in New Bedford, MA and lived there until about
1918, then went to California. I searched the 1900 Census and found
2 families that have the possibility of being the right one.
Without knowing the names of the other children who arrived here, I
cannot be sure which family is the correct one.

I have searched Ancesrty, the CCA site, the UMINHO site, and others
without finding them.Thank you for offering to search. I hope
you have better results than I have had.

  Hello Group,

In reading some of the archived posts, I have discovered that in 1975
Christmas Day was celebrated on January 6th in the Azores. Does
anyone know how long that practice continued?

The reason I ask is that there is a problem with my paternal
Grandfather's USA Marriage Record. He stated that he was born on
Christmas Day 1882 and that he was 21 years old. The clerk wrote down
his birthday as 25 December 1882. My Grandmother stated she was 20
years old and her birthday was 3 November 1882.

So, if he was born the 25th of December that would actually make him
slightly younger than his wife. I'm wondering if he may have really
been born on 6 January 1882, in which case he would have been 21 at
the time they married on 24 July 1903.

Although he always celebrated his birthday on the 25th of December, if
he was told he was 'born on Christmas Day' it would explain the
  conflict on his marriage record.

Was the tradition of celebrating Christmas on the 6th of January in
the Azores still in effect in 1882?

  Thanks for your help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Death Records

2011-03-20 Thread Ginger
Very informative, I didn't know this info, thank you.

Ginger

On Mar 20, 10:01 pm, emac...@aol.com wrote:
 Death Records.

I found death records the most difficult to read - easier as time went  on.
There is wonderful information in these records. It is the  best source
of information as to the social standing and wealth of a person  in a
village. These records often state that a person left a will.

Until about the early 1800s people were buried in the church...not in
coffins; lime helped for faster decomposition.  In many of the earlier
 records
the exact  location of burial was given :  in front of the  pulpit, on the
gospel side near the gate of the chapel of St. Joseph,  etc. One of my
ancestors was buried in the grave of his grandmother,  Catarina Jacome.  This
 was
interesting.  Her death record states that  she was poor, and  buried in the
grave of her ancestors..and yet she had a  rather large funeral.  Lots of
masses, etc. She died in 1617.  Now her husband was  wealthy, had orange
groves, etc, and when  he died his two sons were executors of his will, and he
was buried near the  pulpit.  I  wonder if these two were separated.  .I've
tried to  find out about orange groves around Santa Barbara, Terceira.  This
in the  late 1500-1600 period.  Nothing

The death records give us a social idea of the parish...from the noble
class to the very poor. We can learn something about the status of our
ancestors.  Such as he was wrapped in a sheet, as he had no proper clothes
 for
burial  Often the record will note the amount paid for the  burial,  such as
120 Reis paid for burial . Or he made no  testament for being very poor
 and was buried gratis.

And then something like the following:  My ancestor, Joana  Gonsalves, died
on 16 Sept 1730, in Sao Bento, Terceira, and was buried in her  brother's
private grave, next to the screen on the Epistle side. Her brother,  Manuel
Simoes  in his will , had provided 50,000 reis for the costs of his  funeral.

Also interesting in the death records is to read:  Emilia Vieira left  her
terca to her daughter , Joanna Sousa.
So one wonders where this terca came from - what morgado?  From what I
remember about morgados is that this is an entailment, and that one who
inherited the morgado could leave a third to a cousin, sister, etc.
I noted several of my ancestors (women) who left terca's to their
daughters.  I am not a good enough genealogist to figure out from what
 morgado
that terca came from.  Maybe it is not possible.

So remember, it isn't only baptism and marriage records.  Learn to  read
 the death records.

Hi Shirley,

You are an Angel. Thank you for offering to help.

The info I have is from USA documents. My paternal Great-
Grandfather's name is Jose Faustina/o Moraes, b. abt. 1856 in Velas,
Sao Jorge. The only firm dates I have for him are his marriage (30
Dec 1880) and his death (31 Jan 1922) here in the USA.
I believe his parents names are Antonio F. Moraes and Maria Rita. I
don't have dates for them. Dates for him and his parents would be
most appreciated.

My maternal Great-Grandmother's name was Maria Santa de Jesus. She
was born abt. 1853 in Velas (I think in the village of Rosaes), and
was also married there abt. 1878-1879. If you can find her
father's name for me, it would help. I believe her mother's name was
Maria Bettencourt. Dates for her are unknown.

I'm sorry that is all I have for you to work with, but anything you
can find would be of help.

God Bless and thanks again.

2009-06-06 Thread Ginger

Hello Maria Sousa,

Thank you for your post. It reminds me of what I over heard as a
child. My dad (born in th USA 1917) had said that his ancestor
'family' had been well to do in the Azores. There was a some sort of
political overthrow that caused the remaining family members in the
Azores to be rendered financially ruined.

Unfortunately, I don't know the details. Perhaps, once the political
coup occured in Mainland Portugal, it spread to the Azores. At that
time, wasn't the Azores still considered part of Portugal? In other
words, the Azores wasn't an autonomous region at that time, was
it?

I apologize for my lack of Portuguese history. I am third generation
American and my parents never shared family history directly with us
children.

Guilhermina Gloria PEREIRA. Her maiden name might have been FREITAS,
but right now I'm not 100% sure. I have no idea what the
Americanized version of Guilhermina would be.

b. 1865
from Calheta, Sao Jorge

arrived Providence, RI, 17 Jul 1915 (age 50)

lived in New Bedford and then went to CA. My last record of her is
the 1920 Census when she is living with her daughter (Emily) and
granddaughter:

Patricia PERRY, b. 16 Apr 1919 in San Francisco, CA, and d. 20 Oct
2003 in Danville, CA

Patricia's sister: Marie PERRY, was b. 23 May 1921 in Oakland, CA

I don't know what happened to Guilhermina after 1920. She may have
moved elsewhere or passed away.

Does anyone recognize these people? And does anyone know what the
Americanized version (if there is one) of the name Guilhermina would
be?

Thank you,

Ginger

2009-03-26 Thread Ginger

Thank you all for your replies. Wow, all of you have found Ancestors
much farther back in time than I yet have, so I don't recognize any of
the names you have posted.

I hope that as my research progresses, I am able to make
connections.

While rearching what happened to Guilhermina, I will keep the name
Wilhermina in mind.Ermelinda changed her name, so possibly
Guilhermina did so as well.

Thanks again,

Ginger

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Name of Facebook Group

2009-03-11 Thread Ginger

Hi Tammy,

Whatever it is called, I think the name should include the word
Azores. Off the top of my head, how about simply:

Azores Group

or

All Things Azores

Regardless of what it is called, I think it will be a hit. Best of
luck with it.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Fraternal organizations

2009-02-28 Thread Ginger

Judy,

Thank you very much for the list of organizations and offer to look
for names in your records. You are awesome.

I will try to first contact any of the New Bedford orgs that may help
my search. However, the records you have access to may not include
the names I am looking for, because these folks left Massachusetts in
1918.

Thanks again.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Fraternal Organizations

2009-02-26 Thread Ginger

Hello Group,

Does anyone know the names of the Fraternal Organizations, for men or
women, that existed in New Bedford, Massachusetts during the time
span of 1885 to 1917?

I am hoping that either my grandfather or his parents (all born in the
Azores) were members of such organizatons. I have been at a brick
wall for a year and a half, and unable to find any more info on them
during the time they lived in New Bedford.

I am hoping that records from such an organization would give me the
names of the towns they came from in the Azores, so that I can begin
searching the Azores records.

Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Manuel Duarte DeMello - Fairhaven MA - NEHGS help

2009-02-19 Thread Ginger

Hi Elaine,

I hope this helps.

I found a Marriage for Manuel Duarte and Francisca Victoria, 3 Feb
1894, in New Bedford.

They were both residents of New Bedford and were married by A. G.
Neves, Priest.

They were both from St. Michael, Azores.

His parents names were listed as, Jose Duarte and Maria Jacintha.

Her parents names were listed as, Jose da Costa and Victoria Amaral.

None of the others I found were even close to this. I had no luck at
all using de Mello or Mello.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: The book, AZores, Nine Islands, One History

2009-02-09 Thread Ginger

Hi Celeste,

All I have to say is DITTO!

On Feb 9, 6:37 pm, celeste perry ccgran...@yahoo.com wrote:
While cleaning out my email file folders, I thought that maybe the book I
have been trying to read might have some answers to an email from Mel dated
 2004.

In her email, Mel asked about the quality of life her ancestors would have
 had.

The book, by Susana Goulart Costa, Azores Nine Islands, One History, does not
answer this question or questions about ancestors in general. What the book
 does do is give the reader a look at how the Islands were settled; governed;
the wars that were fought and the politics. There is great detail about all
of this and it has taken me quite awhile to dig through the first 90 pages!
So many things influenced the lives of those living in the Azores.

I think that the reader can begin to understand what motivated the common
folk that were living in the Azores to do the things they did. I was of the
opinion that many left the Islands because there was too many people and not
enough food. I know there were various other reasons. Thus far, the book has
given me a lot of food for thought about how the politics at different times
played a part as to how people lived and why some left. I don’t get the
feeling that if you worked hard enough you could change your life.

Maybe it is just seeing what has happened here in the US that makes me think
a young person might entertain the notion that living somewhere else might be
the way to go. Older people that have lost their retirement might also be
 thinking the same thing.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New Bedford Churches

2009-01-09 Thread Ginger

Hi Nancy,

I checked my hard copy of the New Bedford phone directory. St.
Lawrence Church is not listed in the yellow pages with other churches,
but I did find one number for it listed in the white pages section.
I hope this number is different from the one you have.

508.992.4251

Good luck with your research.
