Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Yet another wall

2015-07-17 Thread Karen Boggs
Paul we have a cousin Richard Duarte who is the grandson of Manoel Jacinto
Duarte and Maria Quiteira. Richard's father was Manuel Duarte who was 3
years old on the ship coming from the Azores to Hawaii. He has made
several trips to the Azores and has visited family there. He may have some
answers for you. I can contact him and see what he knows or if he has any
records that he has not passed on to me.

 the freguesia of Santo Espirito on Santa Maria for his baptismo record

sailed for Hawaii (Sandwich Islands). The Silvas (Sao Miguel family)
lived their until 1913 when they moved to California. I have a picture
of the family with a neighborhood boy outside their home. While the
Gomes lived in Hawaii until the early 1920's.

I've looked through all of the 1906 passports and did not find them.
Would they be required to apply for a passport in advance of moving?
Would the children (5 of them) also be required to have a passport and
be listed on the forms back in the early 1900's? The last Silva child
was born in 1903, so I'll check the passport for 1903 - 1905 and
double check the 1906 again.

As always thanks for your help.

I've looked through all of the 1906 passports and did not find them.
Would they be required to apply for a passport in advance of moving?
Would the children (5 of them) also be required to have a passport and

There's also a listing for one in Turlock, but I've not tried that one yet:

Lastly, there's a listing for a Portuguese bakery in Hilmar but again, I've not

Another site I belong to just posted this and I thought it cute and
most of us can relate.  So I googled it and here it is.  If you google
The Elusive Ancestor the person who has posted it has a few other nice
poems.  Enjoy!  E

THE  ELUSIVE  ANCESTOR

I went searching for an ancestor ...
I cannot find him still,
He moved around from place to place
And did not leave a will.

He married where a courthouse burned,
He mended all his fences;
He avoided any man
Who came to take the U.S. Census.

He always kept his luggage packed,
This man who had no fame;
And every 20 years or so,
This rascal changed his name.

His parents came from Europe ...
They should be upon some list
Of passengers to U.S.A.,
But somehow they got missed.

And no one else in this world
Is searching for this man;
So, I play geneasolitaire
To find him if I can.

I'm told he's buried in a plot,
With tombstone he was blessed;
But the weather took engraving,
And some vandals took the rest.

He died before the county clerks
Decided to keep records;
No Family Bible has emerged,
In spite of all my efforts.

To top it off this ancestor,
Who caused me many groans,
Just to give me one more pain,
Betrothed a girl named
JONES!

~ Merrell Kenworthy ~ (this the the name listed on the site - not sure
if she is author or not)

It's not a Portuguese Restaurant, it's run by the same  Portuguees American
family that opened it  in 1894,  and I've never met anyone who's eaten there
that didn't love it.

Their specialties are the Cream of artichoke soup made from the artichoke they
grow, the cioppino, with the portuguese touch of cumin in the broth, and the
ollalieberry pie.

Don't know where people get the idea it's a Portuguese restaurant.
