Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Does anyone subscribe to GenealogyBank

2012-06-20 Thread Linda Johnson
Hello. I search all documents on GenealogyBank. There is no listing.
The obits start from 1977 to today.
I looked for historical events as well.
I could find nothing for that year.
The only record that I could find was SS Death Index - Antone Leal born
2/7/1890
and died Sept 1963 in california.

Thank you for the information on NEPS. I keep reading about it but I
didn't know anything about what and how it was used. Thanks again. Linda

 Linda,

 Here's the web address: http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/

Its known as NEPS for short because the official name is
Núcleo de Estudos de População e Sociedade

It has databases for Pico, Faial and Sao Jorge and is adding more as it
goes along. I went to the genealogias submenu for Azores (which gave me a
choice of Pico, Faial or Sao Jorge)and then clicked on the map for Lages do
Pico and got the villages within the council area. Once there, I clicked on
the Union Jack flag to get everything in English. Here's the direct link to
 Calheta de Nesquim :
  http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=Calheta;lang=en

Type in any name you're looking for and see what comes up. Try omitting a
name sometimes is also helpful. Such as only use Manuel Silva when looking
for Manuel Borba Silva (I'm making up a name here) to see who comes up.
People often changed names over the course of their lifetime to distinguish
themselves from someone else in the village or to honor someone who has
 passed.

If it still doesn't make sense after you've tried it out. I'll write out
more specific instructions later. I'm somewhat limited for time as I'm at
 work right now.

 Hope this helps.

I have also changed my index from last name to first name. This came about
because of the Maria Jose, Maria Elena, etc. that had no surname when they
were baptized. The program I use made the second name come up as a
surname. In FTM, you just type the name into the family page and enter \\
after the name. This makes the first name come up when you search for
someone. I found this helped me find names quicker for those people who had
several surnames and also those who had a first and middle name and no
surname. For me, the name and baptismal/birth date (or approximate dates)
make it a quicker way to identify someone.

I would say there is no correct way to enter names. When this name
things comes up, I enter in the notes the name as I first find it; then I
enter the date and source for any change in the name.

 *Hello there E,
In answer to your question (How many name changes can one family have?
If you mean surnames, It can add up and it may vary with the time in
history when it occurred. In my own family tree, The Vasconcelos surname
goes back (including me) 6 generations to my 4G grandfather Antonio Caetano
de Vasconcellos (born about 1740). His parents were Joao Pimentel Velho and
Anna Pimentel. I was unable to find any record of his parents so he was the
end of that line. Anna Pimentel's parents were Manoel Pimentel and Isabel de
Freitas. Manuoel Pimentel's parents were Domingos Nunes and Marrianna Fraga
both end of line. Isabel de Freitas' parents were Domingos Fernandez and
Catharina de Freitas, both end of line. So in that particular branch of my
family tree, surnames seemed to have changed every generation in the late
 1600's and early 1700's.

 John Vasconcelos

history when it occurred.
 Regards,
 John Vasconcelos

I have been chasing this family for some time now. After months of
searching, I have finally found them in the 1930 census. This family has
changed their surname 3, yes, 3 times since coming to the US. Now I'm
beginning to think they didn't want to be
 found..enough already!

How do you avoid this? Does making your tree private help at all? Linda
