2017-08-09 Thread Sami
luiznoia,
Thank you so much for finding the 1880 census! With the Ignacio being
spelled Ygnacio, and John using the Portuguese spelling Joao, no wonder I
couldn't find them. They did have a son named Joseph, and a lot of other
children. I do have Filomena coming to the U.S. in 1868, but it is with her
father and several siblings. She is 13. They are from Feteira, Faial
according to the passport record. I also have her father and mother's
baptism records and they are indeed from Feteira, Faial. About John and
Filomena's marriage: According to the 1900 census, they had been married 30
years, so that indicates they married in 1870, which would have them
marrying in the U.S. Family stories say John was already in the U.S. before
Filomena came. I am still trying to find out if they married in a church
nearby, that may still exist so I can find records.

Hi luiznoia! Yes, those are my 2nd great grandparents. I have recently made
contact with a close dna match that was able to put me in touch with two
other cousins on that side. All three are my second cousins once removed!
Unfortunately, no one knows the true story of how John Enes Vargas got here
to the U.S. and what island he came from. His wife was from Feteira, Faial,
so maybe his family was from there. All anyone knows is that his father's
name was Joseph (Jose?) and his mother was possibly Francesca. I can find
nothing on this couple. Still looking! Thank you for sharing what you
found, it is appreciated!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Passport Translation Please

Mara, here are the names as I know them: Father is Jose de Vargas Dias, a
widow from Feteira. His children are Francisco (who wasn't listed), two
daughters named Maria, two named Rosa, a daughter named Filomena, and the
youngest son named Joao. I found the record on Ancestry that lists them
coming off the ship Maria da Gloria in August of 1868. The names there are:
Jose, Maria M, Maria Gloria, Filomena, Roza Isabel, and Joao.

I found them! Ancestry had a Massachusetts Passenger and Crew Lists,
1820-1963. The names and some ages were messed up, but my guess is that
whoever met them in Boston getting off the ship didn't understand them?

Thank you. I was wondering if it were possible that the 13 year old's name

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Returning Home to Azores from US

2017-03-16 Thread Sami
Hi Jeremy,
I'm sorry I have no advice, but I am in a similar position. I searched a
long while for what happened to my great-grandfather. He disappeared after
the 1930 census and I couldn't find a death record or anything on him. Just
recently, I found out that he returned home to Capelo, Faial to live out
his remaining days. I too cannot find any record of his going back. I
cannot even find records of him coming to the U.S. I'm beginning to think
he swam, ha ha. Anyway, I just wanted to say I understand how you feel,
especially about getting a picture. I have none of any of my Azorean
ancestors, which makes me very sad. Best of luck and I hope you get your
information without paying those ridiculous fees!

[AZORES-Genealogy] ENOS/ENES VARGAS CONCORD, CA

2017-02-27 Thread Sami

I am looking for any information on *John ENOS (VARGAS)* born abt.1841;
immigrated either in 1860 or 1868, lived in Concord, Contra Costa County,
CA and was a farmer; and a woman named *Emma VARGAS*. They were married
about 1870. I don't know where but I sure wish I did so I could get their
marriage certificate. They had 14 children; 13 living. I could not find
them in any census reports prior to the 1900, so I am missing 3 of their
children. These are the ones I do know:

*Joseph* b. abt. 1873
*Mary L. (DUTRA)* b.1874 d. 1957 of Concord

*Emma (my great-grandmother) *b.12 Jul 1880 d. 30 Sep 1957 in Santa Clara
*Annie* b. abt. 1882
*Theresa (NUNES)* b.1885 d. 1968 of Concord
*Manuel* b. abt. 1886
*Frank* b. abt. 1887 of Concord
*Angie (MESQUITA)* b.1889 d. 1972 in Hayward
*Aggie (Agnes) (BENZ)* b.1892 d. 1980
*Evelyn (MCDERMOTT)* b.1897 d.1966 in Marin Co.

There is a story circulating in Ancestry about a John Enos Vargas born in
1838...but I cannot reconcile the information about this man with my John.
I lost this couple after the 1910 census, but found a man by the same name
in the 1920 census living as a lodger in the Clyde Hotel, married, but no
Emma. Then I found a woman with the same name, married, in another 1920
census living as an "inmate" in the Napa State Hospital. This could
possibly explain why they are not together in a census after the 1910.
There is also a Find A Grave entry on a couple with the same names who died
in 1923 and 1928, and are buried in St. Stephen's in Concord. They farmed
for years in Concord, so this too is plausible, but I am not sure if these
are my John and Emma. Any information anyone has regarding these two will
be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Edna, YES! I'm still trying to figure out that too! I was sure it was from

His godfather was Manuel Silveira de Faria- I'm assuming that's who he was

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Faria from the Azores

2017-02-17 Thread Sami
I just wanted to post an update: As of last night, I found Manuel and his
family This has been 3 years of digging. I'm so excited! He and his
family were from Capelo, Faial. His father was Antonio Pereira GOULART;
mother was Maria Angelica do Coracao de Jesus. I am now trying to connect
him from his birthplace in Capelo to where he lived for a little over 40
years in California, and then back to Capelo where he died. I'm having no
luck finding passports, naturalization papers, etc. on him so the search
continues. I have someone looking up his death record for me so hope to
find more there! On to the ENOS/ENES VARGAS possibly DIAS side next! Thanks
to everyone who responded. If anyone has Manuel and/or any of his family
members in your family and have pictures, PLEASE contact me!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Faria from the Azores

2017-02-16 Thread Sami
Thank you Sandra! I've contacted a couple other churches in the area just
yesterday- St. Paul (my great-grandmother's mass was held there when she
died), and St. Catherine of Sienna. Is St. Joseph's still there? My
great-grandmother and my grandfather are buried at St. Josephs. I'll check
into it!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Faria from the Azores

2017-02-14 Thread Sami
Does anyone have any of these people in their family trees please? I keep
hitting brick walls with each one of these I try to trace. The main ones
are Manuel P. Faria, John Enos/Enes Vargas (or sometimes shown as John V.
Enos), and John's wife Emma. Does anyone know if "Emma" is a nickname for
Philomena/Filomena? Thanks!

Rats! Do you know if a person could leave straight from California though?
About how long would it have taken to get back home by ship?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Travel

2017-02-10 Thread Sami
If someone were living in Contra Costa Co.,CA and decided to just up and go
home to the Azores, by what manner would they have left between the years
of 1930 and 1940? Was there a direct passage from California to the Azores?
If by ship, is there a database where I could look for the person?
Thanks!
