The people really are so gracious. A woman was closing up her shop, just
around lunch, and we asked her where a certain cafe was. As the directions
were complicated, she asked us to get in her car and she drove us there. This
was in Ponta Delgada, On Faial, our cab driver had sons in the States. Super
nice people.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Trip Assistance

Good morning,
Just wanted to chime in, about visting the Azores.
My husband and I, visited Faial and Sao Miguel, three years ago.
The people are so gracious and halpful.
Neither one of us speak or understand Portuguese.
We, didn't find that a barrier, because a lot of the residents have either
lived
in the states and moved back.
We, live in R.I., and so many people we met had ties to New England.
Enjoy!

2014-10-14 Thread 'Bill Boyd' via Azores Genealogy
Knowing someone on the island is a big help!
Just went to Terceira and Graciosa in July. My Aunt went before me and my
mother after. I have some quick tips!

The travel agent was near useless. Got all birth dates wrong, names wrong and
the sex of my son wrong. We found this the day before after insisting on trying
to check in the day before the flight. Took a while for US on the phone to
Lisbon to correct. Skip the travel agent. Book on SATA and use AirBNB to find a
place. We stayed in a nice house across the street from the ocean in Porto
Martin. Quite nice house with 2 rooms, full kitchen and huge yard for 70 euros
a night.

We got the Berlitz pocket guide and CD. Also used phone based translators. I
was able to get a SIM for my iPhone at Vodafone in Angra. I have Verizon and
called to have it unlocked before leaving. I then gave the SIM to my mom for
her Galaxy S5. Worked great!

I have more tips and need to write something up Let me know if you have
specific questions. Oh, I also got a phone book for all of the islands. I've
scanned in by island. Let me know if you want it and I can send directly.

Regards,

Bill

As an American expat in Portugal near Lisboa, I second Ângela. For second
language learners dialects are essentially different languages instead of
idiosyncratic extensions as they are to native speakers. Learn the language as
it is spoken where you want to use it. Assimil on line has European Portuguese
as does Michel Thomas the Basic Course. Enjoy.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Trip Assistance

2014-10-13 Thread Greg
Hello,
We went last year just after Páscoa, we connected with my grandfathers family
on Faial.
Our experience was greater and more than imaginable... with the help of all the
gracious people from this list!
There were several festas celebrating "Espirtu santo at some of the emperios on
Faial, we met more than 300 primos!

We flew from El Salvador to Los Angeles, then to Boston, flew SATA nonstop
directly to to Sao Miguel.

We used AirBnB.com for many of the accommodations and connected... to what I
call “todo mundo son primos” everyone is my cousin... the most helpful people!

Once there on Sao Miguel for a few days we met a man named Pedro, he is a cow
expert and told us about a special inner island flight plan, since we arrived
to Sao Miguel on SATA the offer was available to us as well, I understood many
of the business people use this service.

You can’t (at least at that time) book it online or even see it online. You
have to be at one of the SATA offices or over the phone.
They sell you a package, ours was $180 euros and we flew to Flores, then flew
to Faial (took ferry to Pico, and later took ferry to Sao Jorge, then flew from
Faial onto Terceira and later flew back to Sao Miguel. (Then back to Boston
with original round trip ticket)

Bear in mind that at first I didn’t really want a strict itinerary but we had
to create one to get the package deal... they helped us by suggesting several
routes, very flexible in the planning stages.

IF we would of just randomly flew when we felt like it between islands the cost
was about $80 or $90 euros per island “one way” so we saved bundle.

Hope this helps...
