Thanks so much Gayle but I don't need anything specific! Just like to know
these things for my classes etc. Always good to know all of the 'info'

Rosemarie,

The Boston Diocese records are on the site: americanancestors.org
According to this week’s e-mail, the Farmington parish was just added. I can
send you the link to the newsletter if you’d like to read the article. And, if
there’s something specific you need looked up, and you can wait until after
this semester ends (and Christmas, for that matter,) I can probably do it.
Unfortunately, my life is too chaotic to promise anything until after finals
are over.

I believe Ancestry helped with these records which may be why it is also on

The records are at NEHGS, Rosemary —>
https://www.americanancestors.org/historic-catholic-records-online

You can be a free member and get access to the indexes and the full records
when they first are posted online for a period of time. After that you need
to be a full member to see the hi res versions and all the records they
have. So they are giving us some access. The partnership with Ancestry came
as a bit of a surprise to me but I guess in order to complete this project
they need the money to do it and was able to secure it more quickly from
them than from individual donations. I can understand that.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Boston, Massachusetts, Catholic Sacramental Records, 1789-1900

2017-11-14 Thread Joanne Mercier
I wasn’t aware that the Archdiocese was going to let the records be on any
other site except NEHGS but I guess that changed. From my understanding now
the indexes will always be free at HisGen but you will need to be a member
to see the actual pages and entries. I’m not sure what is available to
Ancestry.com members but when I find out I’ll report back unless someone
else does.

A little history on the blurred lines in my neck of the woods - up until
1872 southeastern MA (including Cape Cod and the Islands) and Rhode Island
were part of the Archdiocese of Boston. In that year the Diocese of
Providence was formed and included all of Rhode Island, southeastern MA,
the Cape and the Islands. In 1904 the Diocese of Fall River was formed from
all southeastern MA parishes outside of RI but it’s territory is not drawn
cleanly. For example, the towns of Rochester and Lakeville, which are south
of Plymouth are part of Boston while their neighbors East Freetown, Marion
and Wareham are part of Fall River. Many Portuguese immigrants settled all
throughout this area so depending on when they arrived will depend on which
diocese they belonged to and celebrated their sacraments in. Checking all
three of these dioceses when searching after 1850 is not a bad idea.

I hope that helps.

Joanne M or someone else may know Diocese history better...there is the
Diocese of Fall River. I don't know when it was formed. If the ancestor
married down there, they might NOT be found in the Diocese of Boston
records.
