I agree with Cheri in that the passports are a great place to start for you.
You have an approximate date so if you find your ancestor, the records from
that time generally include where they were from as well as parents. It will be
a great clue to guide you to the appropriate church records.

Good luck and happy hunting!

2017-03-21 Thread Cheri Mello
Trisha,

You have names and dates, but you need the freguesia (village) over there
to begin your search.
Here's a how to from the Azores Genweb of ideas on how to find your
freguesia: https://goo.gl/vOijK0

Since their names a little different, you *might* be able to find the
outbound from the Azores on the "Passaportes." You have "about" dates. So
start there, and then search a year before and then a year after. Then keep
expanding. You want to look in the port of Angra:
http://tombo.pt/en/d/acores

Good luck, Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Leonardo/Simas family in Humboldt County

2017-03-21 Thread Trisha
Hello!

I have been working on my genealogy for quite some time. My family from the
Azores is a complete brick wall. Here is what I know:

My great grandpa was Frank Joseph Leonardo (Possibly Francisco Jose) b.
1889 in Terceira. He emigrated in abt. 1909.

He married:

Emelia (census says Amelia) Gertrude Simas b. 1894 in Terceira. She
emigrated in about 1913.

Besides that, I really have zero information on them. Franks mothers maiden
name may have been Goncalves. I have found census info for a "Amancio
Golcalves Leonardo" who I believe may be Franks older brother.

Emelia's mothers maiden name may be Brito.

Anyone know of what I should be looking? I'm so lost here.
