Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Mother's name
I think Bill has it right. To me it's a large stylized 'M' that is partly overwritten by a letter from the line above. Then by 'a' and an elongated R, then 'ia' that spells Maria. Also, in my view, when you have many, or even a few, other pieces of corroborating evidence, such as other records, and no other possible matches, etc, this evidence has to trump whatever we think. The marriage that Bill cited is very strong, so *absent other possibilities*, this has to be right. To verify, find someone named Cecilia married to person of same name in same time period, and you will have your answer. Eric, I think that you are going to need to find another baptism for this couple's children to make sure. I still think it's Secilia or some version of it but there is something else after that, de___Machado. I can't really make it out but it could be de Souza?, that fits the space. Eric, good job! I agree with someone else's prior post the name I see is Secilia (CecĂlia). Sorry can't recall the name of the person who said it. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Mother's name
I agree that the last name is Machado, but think the first name is Maria. The newly available SJ marriage index shows a Manuel Pereira de Lemos marrying a Maria de Luis Machado on 12 Oct 1711 in this same parish. I can't read it with certainty, but I think that might be the parents on this baptism. The only names I see clearly enough to guess are Manuel and Lemos for the father and Machado for the mother.
