Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Public Trees
When it comes to having a public tree. I have my research tree and my tree for display. I can care less what others have in their tree because that is their house. Mine is documented and sourced. I barely get any time for this hobby. I have no time to worry what others are doing on their trees. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Public Trees
Hi Pam, When you send out an invitation for someone to view your tree, you need to set them as a Guest, not an editor or contributor. That way they cannot add anything to your tree. I think this might have been what happened. When you send out an invitation to someone there is a drop down box next to their name/email/username where you can choose what role you want them to have. You can also go in afterward (Now) and set them as a guest if they are currently an admin/contributor. To go in now and change it you go to your tree. At the top click on the drop down menu and choose share your tree. A pop up window comes up and at the top you'll see these words: After you invite your family and friends to this tree you can manage invites and roles on the Tree Settingshttp://trees.ancestry.com/tree/47823284/settings/sharing/manageinvitees page. The words Tree Settings is a link and you click on that it lets you update your settings for people who you are allowing to view your tree. If it were me, I would not rely on whoever changed your tree to go change it - After you set them to guests you can make the changes yourself so you are sure they are correct. Kind of a pain but it will be done correctly. Suzanne On Sunday, March 31, 2013 11:10:30 PM UTC-6, Pam Santos wrote: Was wondering how many have public trees? Thanks Kathy, yes I have found erroneous information on my father also who passed away in 2000. Emailed the person but no response. Suzanne nobody changed my tree and the people I have invited are Guest. What happened one person who I had invited put the information from my tree on to heir public tree and then from their people randomly started attaching children and putting census that they were living in England in 1851 when they married in Massachusttes in 1836 and are in the census in Massachusettes in 1850. They never went to England nor were they from England. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Public Trees
I agree with the postings here. This is my biggest pet peeve in my genealogy odyssey. I too have had people take info from my tree and wrongly attach to their trees. My own grandfather's records have been taken from my tree without my knowlege (because it was public back then), they posted that he died in a different year, buried in a different state, different age. I went to Joe's funeral so I'm pretty sure I have the right guy! I too wrote and asked for a fix, but also never got a reply or a fix. I was furious. I've had this happen on other lines as well, and have had photos taken and attached to other trees without permission or a credit. I have since removed all photos and privatized all my trees and before I release info, I've learned to watermark photos, and go check out their tree first. Most people want to do it right, but a lot just want to attach-attach-attach without documenting. Quantity without quality. I suppose what irks me most is who knows how long those incorrect trees will survive online and perhaps some distant 2nd or 3rd cousin will copy it all wrong and they'll be following the wrong family for eternity. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Public Trees
I have the same frustration and I think the reason folks don't respond is that they are amateurs who see the ads on TV, jump at the introductory offer, find a few common names, swipe them to their tree and then lose interest. When they don't pay to stay on Ancestry, they're long gone though their incorrect information is there for eternity. The only thing we can do is put comments on their tree regarding the incorrect information but if their tree is private we're out of luck. One Ancestry member distantly related to me has only a dozen or so names on his tree at any one time - the names he's researching using the Ancestry sources. Once he has everything he can get, he deletes these folks and ads new names to research. David On Sunday, March 31, 2013 10:10:30 PM UTC-7, Pam Santos wrote: Was wondering how many have public trees? RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Public Trees
This reminds me of all the errors created and perpetuated from the Minho website (NEPS).There are so many mistakes in the Ribeiras, Pico families, I can imagine someone having only half their real ancestors by clicking on their links. It might be worse in Ribeiras than other places, because of so many similar names - so many named Silveira. Half the wives are Silveira and many are Maria Silveira. So whoever did the research got careless and just started connecting the dots. Kathy Cardoza talked in a recent post about proper evaluation of the information. That's what is lacking for Ribeiras. Quite shocking and shoddy work.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com Original Message Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Public Trees From: David Perry djperr...@sbcglobal.net Date: Mon, April 01, 2013 8:03 am To: azores@googlegroups.com I have the same frustration and I think the reason folks don't respond is that they are amateurs who see the ads on TV, jump at the introductory offer, find a few common names, swipe them to their tree and then lose interest. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Public Trees
This is a story that is all too common of posting your tree on the net and then having someone hijack it and then add errors. I will not post my information on a site that makes it easy for someone to down load it. I do have my basic tree posted on the Family Tree DNA site but if anyone wants to copy it they will have to do it by copying one name at a time and type it in to their site. This is not to say I will not share my information as I am happy to help anyone on this list that asks as I feel that we are all serious about our work and are not just collecting names to fill in blanks. A number of years there was a discussion on the old Roots Web Azores List about posting trees and that some sites (companies) that were encouraging you to post it were assuming copy rights for your work which would prevent you from publishing your own work. I am not sure if that applies today but I am not giving my information to someone to profit from. I would also say that beware of any information that comes from on line trees (this includes Family Search) as there are many that are un-sourced and contain errors. I will not give information unless I have the source for it. My tree is public, mainly to find out if someone from my Mom's side has any info on her ancestors. I have seen my Uncle Stanley on another tree with his correct information but totally different children. They never wrote back to me, either. My great aunt's tombstone looks like 1906 when it's really 1903 because I have her death certificate. Wrote to them, also, but never heard and never went back to their tree to verify if they changed it. I've seen other trees where the parents were born after the kids! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Public Trees
That is exactly what I do, because what comes up to research is more than when you are researching with just a name, and that person family info in the search catagory. I am a little perplexed because I do not, but had someone invited to my tree on my mothers side and made that info public. I went on the ancestry and there are random children added to my couple and a date of death which is not correct. I emailed the people and I hope they fix it, other wise others will copy what they have and its not correct. I also emailed 8 people informing them they had the wrong parents for a person who married my Antone Louis Medeiros (Bisho) So far only one responded. I only emailed them because they would have been researching the wrong parents. ( I am not even related to her) I would hope they would fix it so others don't make the same mistake. -- -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com.
