Mel (over on Island Routes) has the Abergeldie leaving on Mar. 2, 1883 as
well. She has it arriving on May 5th or 10th. I've asked her to check for
typos. Lusaweb has the 10th. Cheri

Aaron P,

Bob De Mello's book has 3 ships going to Hawaii in 1883:

Abergeldie, Jan. 1, 1883-Apr. 30, 1883
Hankow, April 30, 1883 - April 30, 1883
Bell Rock, Aug. 3, 1883 - Sept. 3, 1883.

I will change the Abergeldie's date in my copy of Bob De Mello's book to
read: March 2, 1883-April 30, 1883. Basically, 2 months. Don't know what to
do with the Hankow's dates though. Cheri

>From "Passport Registrations, Portuguese Immigrants from Azores to Sandwich
Isles, 1879-1883" by Bob De Mello, page 424:

Vital, Manuel do Rego, age 32
Father: Manuel do Rego
Mother: Jacinta Candida
>From Rosario, Lagoa
#1143 Abergeldie
No Come

The Abergeldie left Jan. 1, 1883 and arrived April 30, 1883.

I found his entry in the passaporte book, leaving the Azores.
1883, Feb. 14, Passaporte # 322, Passenger #1:143 (which Bob De Mello
transcribed as 1143). He's 32, single, can't write. The final column, which
asks for observations, says "Não foi," which Bob de Mello transcribes as
"No come." Ummm, then the whole ship didn't come. I would guess that there
weren't any observations to note, so "não foi" was written. Maybe a native
speaker can shed more light on this.
http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1875-1883/PASSAPORTES-PDL-1875-1883_item1/P137.html

Also, there's no way for Manuel to register in February if the Abergeldie
left on Jan. 1st. So something is wrong with this information.

In "Portuguese Immigrants to Hawaii" compiled by Edgar C. Knowlton, Jr.
page 381, it says he came on the Hankow in 1883. The Hankow did sail in
1883. I can't tell you the dates. The Bob De Mello said the Hankow sailed
April 30, 1883 and arrived April 30, 1883. I typo must have been made. The
only other thing the Knowlton book said was s40. I looked in the front of
the book and I don't know what this means.

So your Manuel was born c. 1850. Here's his baptism in 1851:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1847-1851/SMG-LG-ROSARIO-B-1847-1851_item1/P390.html

Although you are in the 2nd time period, the priest does list the baby's
grandparents. Here are some key words to look for and some examples to get
you to pick out key parts:
https://goo.gl/4Tzc2i

His "neto paternal" looks like "Nepto Paterno." You should be able to pick
out names (they are capitalized). First the parents, then the paternal
grandparents, then the maternal grandparents.

Good luck, Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: The Vital family from Lagoa, Sao Miguel to Wialua Hawall in 1883.

2018-05-07 Thread David Perry
I can provide some information on the Vital name in Lagoa. Many Vital
folks were at one time do Rego Baldaia way back in the 16th and 17th
centuries. Most of them became simply do Rego in the 1700s but there soon
became so many in Lagoa (mostly Rosario parish) that many added a second
name to the do Rego name, I'm guessing to distinguish one do Rego clan from
another. After all, with every first son having the name Manoel, there
would be dozens of Manoel do Regos in town at any given time. Some of the
second names added were Coelho (my ancestors), Vital, Borges and others
less common. It's unclear to me where these second names came from since
Coelho means rabbit in Portuguese. Subsequent generations took one name or
the other upon emigration. For instance, in my family I have cousins using
the name Rego and others using the name Coelho. Hope this is useful.
