I got a call back from the local Catholic Church and they confirmed that one of the family had Mass said there, but they do not have funeral home info. I would like the death certificate from the county and I may do that, it gives great info. I have just paid for quite a bit of info for another line recently, so I may wait and do that if no other lead comes up. This is another situation of a relative who won't share info, even though I gave them quite a bit. Well, the suggestions you have given are all very good and I thank you. I would look in the location where he lived the longest. Since the family has to pay for the obit, they may not have put it in the paper where he died, since he may have known less people there. My grandfather lived in the same town for 60 years. We moved him to a nursing home in the state my mother was in two months prior to his death. We only had the obit in the papers in the Boston suburb he was from. My parents lived in NH but they have a plot in MA. When my father died last summer we contacted the funeral home in MA. They then contacted a local NH funeral home to get my father and then transport him to MA. We always use the same funeral home, maybe his family does too! Do you know the one his family would use? Charlene, I'd get an informational copy of the death certificate from the county. The informant is usually a relative. I'd try to contact that person, or search their death information and look for that Obit. This has worked for me a few times before. It can be placed in both places (as Cheri mentioned) or not at all. The cost to place an obit can be prohibitive if the person didn't have insurance. Some newspapers (present day) do have a free placement but it's like one sentence. I'm finding many of my relatives families didn't have obits for the deceased. In my most recent experience, my aunt (Homen/Homem) passed away two months ago. She lived in Los Angeles for 45 years but as she got older her association with people got less and less. Since most of her siblings still live in New Bedford and she was born there, I put the obit in that local paper and not in LA. Her wish was to be cremated but she does want her her twin sisters ashes to be buried with their parents. In this scenario the funeral home would have mailed her ashes to the cemetery of choice by Priority Mail or I can do it myself and make arrangements directly with the cemetery. Our newspaper offers a free obituary that is very complete. It lists all survivors and those who have predeceased and the time of the services. This is handled by the funeral home. I think it depends on the size of the town. In the large city near us, I believe that all obits are paid for. Hopefully, your relative resided in a small town for most of their life, since we still have obits published of people who lived here years ago. Charlene, I have had relatives who died in one county and are buried in another and the obits appeared in both local papers. LA is a tough place to try and find an obit as I went through this a while back and could not find the one I was looking for. My brother in law's brother just passed away in CT and he is being buried in MA and his obit appeared in the local MA paper.
