Eric

Based on my experience I would say The combination de Sousa Borba is more
common in Calheta followed by Topo.
Since you researched Calheta I went to Topo records and found one Alexandre,
born in August 1882. He was son of Manuel Jose da Cunha, shoemaker and Rosa
Delfina, seamstress. Paternal grandson of Antonia de Sao Jose and maternal
grandson of Antonio de Sousa de Borba and Ana Delfina. The godfather was a
Alexandre de Sousa de Borba (most likely a maternal oncle/cousin)

I did get in touch with the Portuguese organization - they have a historian
who is very helpful, but apparently many records were lost in the 1950s

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching Alexander Souza, São Jorge, 1883

2016-03-18 Thread Cheri Mello
Eric S,

In the obituary it says that he belonged to a Portuguese organization.
You'll need to search those records.

You will have to do all searches on him as Alexander (Alexandre) da Souza,
just Souza, Souza Borba, S. Borba or just Borba. Don't assign anything to
the names. He could have tacked on his grandma's maiden name of Borba for
all you know.

His wife's name would have been Maria Caetano Mancebo.

Here's a bunch of other resources to search to find that freguesia
(village) on Sao Jorge: goo.gl/BhM8Fs

Good luck!
