They are 3rd cousins (same 2 greats) and I take it that the mixed third
means something like 2nd cousins, once removed. Probably on a different
line. So go back about 100 years and you'll find it all!

Linda - I have a good grasp on canon law since I’ve had to take courses for
my work. It was the phrase "mixto de terceira” that threw me off. Do you
happen to know what that means? As far as 4th level
collateral consanguinity we’re talking great great grand whatevers and
according to my sources *"**is the relation subsisting among persons who
descend from the same commnon ancestor, but not from each other. It is
essential to constitute this relation, that they spring from the same
common root or stock, but in different branches.” *Sounds like everyone on
every island to me! ;)

Hi Joanne,

Quite frankly I don't know. My grasp of consanguineous relationships is really 
weak. I would guess that the couple shares great or great-great grandparents 
but that one line is a generation longer than the other. 

Perhaps an experienced forum member can say if that's correct or not.

...And, I'd be grateful if someone knowledgeable in the topic could point to 
some pertinent resources... (the chapter from "Medieval to 19th century Canon 
Law for Dummies" would be perfect, thanks!)

Margaret - yeah, I couldn't read that either but the year date is definitely 
1885 because I found the marriage entry that confirmed it. Also, they married a 
week before they had their second son, Antonio, so that was a help, I guess. ;) 
 

Linda, I'm not familiar with the terminology on that consanguinity. Can you 
help me understand that?

grandparents married. It looks like his legitimacy is documented in the
margin but I can’t make the whole thing out. I’ll also include my great
