Thank you. That will be my next step. As I said, I am still a novice and I
am trying to learn as much as I can.

I have Leandro de Sousa Melo, son of José de Sousa Melo and Ana de Jesus
who married Maria Cordeiro, daughter of Manuel dos Santos Cordeiro and Ana
Narcisa in Relva a 23.9.1832

Serafins birth recird should say who his maternal and paternal grandparents
were.

Good luck!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Searching for Leandro (Mello) surname

2010-08-12 Thread Hilda Soares
Hello,

I am new to this whole family history search so please bear with me. I am
trying to search for my father's family line. However, I seem to have
encountered a snag. My father who is getting on in age has told me that his
surname of Leandro was not the real family name. Apparently his grandfather
or great grand father was Leandro de Sousa Mello and decided that he didn't
want to pass on the Mello name to his children so he passed on his first
name of Leandro. The entire family comes from what is now Covoada, San
Miguel, Azores. However, the Village did not have it's own hurch until
recently so most records were recorded either in Arrifes or Relva. I seem to
have found a Leandro De Sousa Mello from Arrifes born around 1830's. But I
cannot find anything between his point and when my grandmother came to
America.

I only know that my Grandmother, Maria Sardinha Fernandes (born in
1906) married a Jose de Sousa Leandro (born around 1900) and had 12
children, four died in infancy and the other 8 are Jose, Joao, Manuel,
David, Domingos, Conceicao, Serafim, and Maria do Carmo. All eight chilldren
and my grandmother came to America after she became a widow. Serafim is my
father.

Has anyone else come across this family line?
