Soldados pagos had a legal contract, this was their profession during that time 
of períod (that's why some ran off). Mercenaries also existed, but belonged to

Recently while searching baptism records on CCA for Flamengos in the early 
1700s, I am seeing a lot of records showing the father’s occupation as “soldado 
pago” which Google translates to paid soldier. Does this mean “mercenary” or 
does it have some other meaning? Someone suggested that it means a soldier who 
serves for 8 years.

Any ideas.
