[AZORES-Genealogy] Unknown location in Sao Miguel

2009-12-23 Thread JC
Hi Everybody,

Hopefully someone out there can help me with this. On my g
grandmother's death certificate, it says that her and her parents
place of birth was Feigao, Sao Miguel. I cannot find any kind of
reference to any place by this name. That of course doesn't mean it
doesn't or didn't exist. Especially since I am so new to looking for
my portuguese roots outside the US. Have any of you heard of this
place or know how I can find out more about it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Merry Christmas

JC

2009-12-23 Thread Cheri Mello
JC,

It's really, really butchered (but you already knew that).

You're going to have to find more records on this ancestor. What year did
she die? Was she a citizen of the US? If your searches on her don't turn
up a less butchered freguesia/village/town, you will have to chase her
siblings down. What do their death certificates say?

A list of Sao Miguel freguesias are here:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/saomiguel.html

The closest I can think of (and it's not close) is Lagoa or maybe Rosto do
Cao, but the syllables aren't even right.

2009-12-23 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi JC

There is a place in Sao Miguel called *Fajã *it sounds just like the written
word you show Feigao.

Now to add to the mix; there are 3 of them in S.Miguel.

a) *Fajã do Calhau *located in the Agua Retorta village
b) *Fajã de Baixo * and *Fajã de Cima *located just of few Kilometres north
of Ponta Delgada.

Item b) it's just one territory divided in 2 villages which by the name
means one above (Cima) the other below (de Baixo).

Hope this might be of some help.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Unknown location in Sao Miguel

2009-12-23 Thread Jacki G.
Margaret,

That does have some familiarity. Her husband was born in Faja de Cima. He
arrived in the US via Hawaii in 1882 when he was 7. It's always possible
that their families were friends. I don't know when she came to the US yet.
This might be a clue as to where to look for that

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Unknown location in Sao Miguel

2009-12-23 Thread Jacki G.
Cheri,

She was born 1/25/1859 in the Azores and died 5/3/1938 in San Jose, CA. I
don't know if she ever became a citizen or not or whether or not she had any
siblings. The person giving the information was my grandmother's sister who
was raised by her from about the age of 4. I have very little information on
this branch. Her son (my g grandfather) was killed in 1909 in Oakland, CA
when my grandmother was 2. When he was killed my g grandmother gave my great
aunt (age 4) to her to raise and kept my grandmother. She soon remarried and
there was little contact after that. The only info I was ever told by my
grandmother was that her father was born on Sao Miguel and his name. She
didn't even know her grandmother's first name.
