Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] where should i start looking?

Hi Jesse,

To start genealogy, you need 3 things: A name, a date, and a place. I see
you have the fregueisa (village) which is fantastic! So many struggle to
find that piece of information.

And no disrespect to your ancestors, but it would be better to just refer
to them by name. I have a lot of Ribeira Quente ancestors, but they aren't
my grandparents. They could be my 2nd cousins twice removed. You don't care
that they are my 2C2R, we are just interested in our common ancestors of
Manuel and Maria (or whoever they may be).

So state their names, birth dates (or approximates) and village that each
one is from. I do Ribeira Quente research and it may not be much for me to
figure out who they descend from. Others on this list may be doing Ribeira
Cha, but you may have to do about 200 years (to about the early 1800s) to
make a connection there. With Ribeira Quente, you lucked out.

You may also want to test your DNA or your parents, if they are alive. Or
your grandparents siblings if they are alive. Test the oldest family
member. We can get more into that later. We just need to get you started.

Find yourself a GOOD genealogy program. If you want to have your genealogy
up in the cloud on Ancestry.com or My Heritage, that's fine, but they are
very limiting program-wise. Here are 3 free ones in alphabetical order. If
you like one of them you can purchase it (will have about 100 more bells
and whistles).

Legacy Family Tree (Standard is free): http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/
(Blue download link is Standard).

Good luck,

Jesse

The Azores GenWeb has resources that will help you get started. You already
have some of the necessary information, that is the Freguesia (village/town)
and island. Try this, in particular and other research aids on the site:
