Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] FW: OUVIDORIA da RIBEIRA GRANDE - Marriage Habiliatation Dossiers

2011-02-13 Thread Cheri Mello
Eliseu,

I never married so I don't know all the Catholic stuff that surrounds a
marriage.

I think the Proclamas are the Proclamations. I've heard of those but I
don't know what they are (in a marriage). I do know the definition (it's
like a public announcement). Ouvidoria I don't know either. I know it's
part of the church stuff in the records. Ouvir is the verb to hear, so
ouvidoira is like a hearing? A hearing in America would be more like 2
people going in front of a judge and he decides whether or not to move
forward with the case (the lawyers reading this will correct my pea-brain
understanding of that).

The dossier sounds like the dispensation, except that it would be for
everybody, not just people who were related getting married (where the heck
do you find those??) I don't know what you meant by burriage (and I didn't
sleep well last night so I can't think what you mean by that).

In the Catholic Churches that I have been in, there is a section in the
bulletin (the piece of paper that you take after church that has all the
announcements and church activities for the week). In one section, it says
Marriage Banns or sometimes Marriage Intentions. Then it would say that
John Adams plans to marry Jane Smith. I don't know how many weeks they run
it or how many months before the marriage that they have to publish it.
That part sounds like the Proclamas (Proclamations). But I don't know the
paperwork (dossiers) behind it since I've never experienced that.

This is what we call the marriage banns in the United States?
