RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Off-Topic Computer Mail Question

2012-09-18 Thread Elaine Sharp

Thank you all for your suggestions and I am working on them. I did have my
husband install my printer to my mini and I was able to print it out from
there. But I still want to figure out how to do this on my laptop. I am
thinking of updating my laptop to from XP to Windows 7 and Microsoft 10,
has anyone done this? I think I can do this online. If so, any problems
doing this?

Thank you.

2012-09-18 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
The first thing I would do is see how much RAM you have. Windows 7 needs 3
or 4 gigs of Ram to run properly. If you can upgrade it may make more sense
cost wise to just get a new lap top. A new lap top will have the Ram and
Windows 7 and most likely have a larger hard drive.

2012-09-17 Thread Pam Santos
Depending on what type of file it is, you probably do not have the correct
program to open up the attachement on your main computer. If its a document
and you don't have microsoft word on your computer for example and opened
it up in notebook or some other word processing program on your computer
that is not the correct program that can decipher it.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Off-Topic Computer Mail Question

2012-09-17 Thread Diane George
Do you know what the attachment is-a document, a picture or something else?
You can usually tell what it is by the extension-that's the part of the
filename that appears after the dot, like .doc or .jpg. That will help you
figure out what to use to open it. If you can't see the extension,
right-click on the filename (after you save it to your computer) and look at
the properties, usually the last choice at the bottom of the list that
appears. You should see something that shows the file type, e.g., Word
Document, JPG File. Once you know that, it should be possible to figure out
if you have the software to view it on your computer.

Let me know if you need more help. You may want to contact me directly.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Off-Topic Computer Mail Question

2012-09-17 Thread Michelle
Hello E,

When the email opens are you able to read any part of the email? If you are is
there a box that shows the attachment file? If so, does it show an extension,
i.e., .doc, .jpg etc? The extension tells you what program you have to use to
read the attachment. It doesn't sound like you are bringing your email in
through Outlook Express...correct?

From your description of your problem, it looks like your niece is
using a microsoft 2010 programs. This program does not work under XP. To
view a microsoft 2010 program on
XP, you need to get the microsoft viewer. With this program you will not
be able to update the file, only view. This program is available to
download from microsoft web page at no cost to you.

open it in 7, save it as a doc not a docx, and then email it to yourself at
the XP computer. Truth is, 7 and XP don't play well together, so you may not
ever get it to open in that format, but she can send it to you in one that
works on your computer if you ask her.
