 Questions about passports:

 1. Were passports required to leave the Azores?

 2. I have been looking through the Registo de Passaportes for a
person who left the Azores in 1904-1905. If his name does not appear
in the register, can I assume that he left through other, unconventional
 means?

 3. There was a passport for an older brother issued in 1905 and
probably not used by him. Is it likely that his younger brother used
this passport to travel to the United States?

 Thanks!

There's a gap in the records (1884-1894) because they are missing.
American ones have missing gaps too :(

If you are researching the USA - in the South circa Civil War, you get
tired of hearing the courthouse burned down and no records are available.
One county courthouse burned down 4 times!!
Some vets who try to obtain a copy of the DD214 have had to deal with the
records being destroyed, if memory serves me correctly, by water
damage.and so it goes. Also, I tried to get records for who was in WWI
and they also were not available.

Lester,

I don't know that someone else could leave under someone else's name.

Only the port of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel is online at this time. You
don't state where your ancestors were from. They could have sailed out of
Angra on Terceira or out of Horta on Faial.
