Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Records I have Compiled.

2012-01-01 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi Rick,

I'm looking for the marriage of my ggrandparents whom I think married in S.
Salvador. My grandmother was born in 1900 and the record states her
maternal grandparents were:
Teresa de Jesus natural of NS Estrela, daughter of Jose de Sousa and
Jacinta de Jesus, received at S.Salvador and married to Geraldo de Resendes
natural of Sao Pedro of Ponta Delgada. I'm guessing their marriage would
have to be after 1870 and before 1885. Anything on Teresa and Manuel in
your list?

Thank you,

Margaret

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Records I have Compiled.

2011-12-28 Thread Gayle Machado
Eliseu,

I have found another record for Ribeira Grande:
Manuel Furtado Forinhao (son of Manuel Furtado Forinhao and Ana Gaspar)
married Gracia Gularte (widow of Mateus Luis, she was the daughter of Manuel da
Costa and Clara Gularte). He was born in Ribeira Grande, she was from
Candelaria. They married 27 Feb 1729.

If I find any more I'll let you know.

Gayle

P.S. Is there a reason for your request ? Are you looking for someone in
particular ?

Subject: RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Records I have Compiled.

Eliseu,

The list is rather short. But, here goes:
 From Graciosa
1. Andre Rodrigues Miranda (son of Antonio Miranda and Maria Reyes,
deceased) married Theresa Garcia
(daughter of Gaspar Garcia Sarmento and Maria Pereira.) She was
born in Candelaria, Pico, and he was
from Luz, Garciosa. Date of Marriage 17 Aug 1733

 From Sao Miguel
2. Antonio Rodrigues Benavides (son of Manuel Benavides and Maria
Rodrigues) married Maria Gularte
(widow of Manuel Pereira.) He was from Rabo Peixo, Ribeira
Grande, Sao Miguel, while she was from
Candelaria, Pico. They married 25 Oct 1730.

3. Antonio Rodrigues Luis (son of Antonio Rodrigues Luis and Maria
da Conceicao) married Maria
Estrella/Josefa (widow of Manuel Arruda). He was from
Candelaria. Either she or her prior husband was
from Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel. (I
must have thought I knew which one I
meant when I wrote out the record 17+ years ago.) Also, my
records show Maria da Estrella while NEPS
shows her as Maria Josefa from Candelaria. They married 3/13
May 1806. Once again a conflict with
NEPS as to the actual date.

I apologize for the confusion in the last record. There are two primary
reasons: 1) The Candelaria records are difficult to read due to fading, ink
smears and bleeding; 2) I was learning as I went with the marriage records
being the first records I transcribed. I did the obits next and some of the
baptisms. I would rather tell you where I am unsure than to pretend I was an
authority. If the people in the last record as of interest to you, I figure
you'll check it out and get back to me with your interpretation. I suspect you
can read Portuguese better than I do.

I hope this helps you. Good luck with your research.

Dear Rick,

Thank you, thank you. Yes, the record is difficult to read, but I've been
poring over it. Looks to me as if Amalia's parents were naturals of Nossa
Senhora da Estrella in Ribeira Grande. I'm so happy to have her
grandparents names, which I had not known. I get the following:

Paternal: Manoel Cabral and Roza Joaquianna (not sure about the last part)
Maternal: Jose Dinis and Roza de Jesus

I'm not sure about Dinis. I think it's a D, but if it's a P it could
be Paiva. I'll look at it again later and see if it becomes clearer.

The date is giving me difficulty, though. I'm reading fifth day of the
month of February of eighteen hundred and--and here is where I get
confused. It has to be quarenta or cinquenta, but I can't make out a
q in the word.. Your title for the photo shows the year to be 1847, but
that would make her 26 rather than 25 at the time of her marriage in 1873.
Could the year possibly be cincuenta e dois? Is fifty ever spelled
that way? According to her gravestone, she was born in 1852, but that
doesn't mean anything.

Anyway, I'll give it a rest for now and then look at it later. In the
meantime, it's great to have the names (sort of) of my new randparents.

Thanks again for all your help with this.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Records I have Compiled.

2011-12-27 Thread Gayle Machado
Eliseu,

The list is rather short. But, here goes:
 From Graciosa
1. Andre Rodrigues Miranda (son of Antonio Miranda and Maria Reyes,
deceased) married Theresa Garcia
(daughter of Gaspar Garcia Sarmento and Maria Pereira.) She was
born in Candelaria, Pico, and he was
from Luz, Garciosa. Date of Marriage 17 Aug 1733

 From Sao Miguel
2. Antonio Rodrigues Benavides (son of Manuel Benavides and Maria
Rodrigues) married Maria Gularte
(widow of Manuel Pereira.) He was from Rabo Peixo, Ribeira
Grande, Sao Miguel, while she was from
Candelaria, Pico. They married 25 Oct 1730.

3. Antonio Rodrigues Luis (son of Antonio Rodrigues Luis and Maria
da Conceicao) married Maria
Estrella/Josefa (widow of Manuel Arruda). He was from
Candelaria. Either she or her prior husband was
from Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel. (I
must have thought I knew which one I
meant when I wrote out the record 17+ years ago.) Also, my
records show Maria da Estrella while NEPS
shows her as Maria Josefa from Candelaria. They married 3/13
May 1806. Once again a conflict with
NEPS as to the actual date.

I apologize for the confusion in the last record. There are two primary
reasons: 1) The Candelaria records are difficult to read due to fading, ink
smears and bleeding; 2) I was learning as I went with the marriage records
being the first records I transcribed. I did the obits next and some of the
baptisms. I would rather tell you where I am unsure than to pretend I was an
authority. If the people in the last record as of interest to you, I figure
you'll check it out and get back to me with your interpretation. I suspect you
can read Portuguese better than I do.

I hope this helps you. Good luck with your research.

Gayle

Doris,

Actually I did this years ago. I only have a hard copy. I'd be glad to look up
something for you, especially in the next week before I start the new semester.

Yes, I would be interested in your compilation of records from Candelaria.

CDs cost money; how much $ would you like me to send and where?

This is wonderful; thank you so much for making it available to us.

Rick,

I'm not sure if anyone is interested in researching on Pico, but I've
transcribed all the marriage and obits from Candelaria. I had started on the
baptisms but quit when the NEPS site came online and included the same records.

1500 marriages compiled from 1784 -1828. There are some marriages I do not have

2011-12-26 Thread Nancy Couto
Dear Rick,

Thank you so much. This is great information! Amalia (or Amelia--she seems to
have used both names in various U.S. records) was obviously older than I
thought she was. I'm so glad that I finally know where she was born. I can't
believe you found this information so quickly. I really appreciate this.

All best,

2011-12-26 Thread Doris Mello
Gayle, I don't know what I was thinking.  I guess I was just thinking in
general.

I may have some questions down the line when I get back into my Genealogy.
It's been 15 years since I did my last research.  I took care of my folks in
the meantime so was unable to spend any time researching.  I can start thinking
about that now.

Thank you, take care, and Happy New Year,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Records I have Compiled.

2011-12-26 Thread Gayle Machado
Dee,

As soon as you're ready, let me know. The new semester starts Jan 9th. I'll be
swamped for a few weeks after that. If you figure out what you need before
then-fine. If not, keep me in mind for Feb. Although, write anytime. Just be
patient until I can get into my notebooks.

You've got me curious as to our connection. And how that connects to Susan. (By
the way, Susan if you're reading this- I loved the picture.)

And, I understand about caring for parents. Been there, done that. It was
exhausting mentally and physically. Everything else takes a back seat.

Take your time. Write when you're ready.

Gayle
