RE: [backstage] A request
Title: Message From: vijay chopra I'll probably hang onto the application anyway and when the Beeb sorts it out with the lawers I can submit a decent functional application to the prototypes section of backstage. (personal, not professional view...) It often helps to convince people if they can see (in pretty picture terms) the benefit that might come from, say, allowing a new feed to happen. Fake up some data, and get it out there. After all, nobody benefits from your hard work otherwise. re: licencing. I'm not saying I agree with it, but many aholder of the rights tovarious content licencesit in a multitude of ways. eg, I thinkthe BBC have the radio rights to thepremier league footy, but not (or limited) tv rights. In a different context, buying iTunes for Windows doesn't give you a licence to run it on Macs. When a tv company shows a Hollywood film on regular free tv, they haven't bought the film, just licenced to show it one (or a limited number) of times. as I say, I'm not arguing this is a good thing : just that there is a lot of precedent, and if you make your living from the content you are more inclined to want to extract maximum value from it. If we could figure out a way to build up a results feed via a mobile/web public wikipedia style approach, that was somehow resistant to people entering garbage all over, then we'd have a creative commons licenced data source :) See also gazetteer data for the uk.
[backstage] iMP released
I see from Slashdot[1] that the BBC have started their Internet Media Player[2] trial. Any backstagers in the lucky public group? I see that it has a Windows only DRM so no point in us Linux users applying for the trial. Back to tvtime for us! [backstage] TV Listing Prototype
Hi, I haven't got around to annoucing my prototype after submitting it last sunday, so here it is. The web site is http://bbc.ask-adders.com/. It provides a simple way of viewing the programs on at the moment and you can drill down to find the genres and then programs that are in the same genre. You can also register and create your own listings, but this needs further development. If you phone 0870 0689 358 or 01483 60462 the TV Listings for the main channels read out to you. This is using Asterisk and a VoIP connection to both voipuser.org and sipgate.co.uk who are providing the PSTN to IP gateway. Finally you can text 07914 229975 with a message and you will be sent the current programs on that channel. The messages you need to send are * TV BBC1 * TV BBC2 * TV BBC3 * TV BBC4 * TV CBBC * TV CBEEBIES * TV NEWS I am interested to hear any feedback. Have fun.
