RE: [backstage] BBC launches 'Second Life for kids', says Guardian
Hi Mario Its not a tie up with Second Life. Its a licence of this game engine: http://www.larian.com/kick.php Or if your language skills are up to it: http://www.ketnetkick.be/ Its actually been in development for quite a while. Second Life is clearly shorthand for anything with an avatar these days. thanks Jem From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mario Menti Sent: 23 January 2007 15:09 To: backstage@lists.bbc.co.uk Subject: [backstage] BBC launches 'Second Life for kids', says Guardian According to http://media.guardian.co.uk/newmedia/story/0,,1996262,00.html : "The BBC is to launch a children's version of the cult virtual world, Second Life. CBBC World will offer youngsters a safe environment to explore, and provide them with different zones offering CBBC content. The project is one of the keystones of BBC Children's move to become truly cross-platform. As in Second Life, children will be able to create virtual versions of themselves on-screen, called avatars. Their characters can then move around CBBC World." Anyone here know more about this? When they say "Second Life", do they really just mean "3d virtual world", or would this actually be based on Second Life technology? Cheers, Mario.

[backstage] radio 4 API
I know this is probably not something that everyone would want, probably a bit obscure... Recently I've been experimenting with the Yahoo Answers API to extract questions and answers to try to build dialogue in stories (online networked stories is my interest). Trouble is the quality of the "conversations" in Yahoo Answers is pretty awful - there's not a lot of decent debate, and a lot of ranting. On the other hand, when I listen to radio 4 "you and yours" (middays) it's really good quality informed and structured debate. It would be great for me if "you and yours" was available as an API (as text), and I could use that instead. Any plans to do something like that? cheers, Dave Miller http://davemiller.manme.org.uk/davemiller_art_blog/ - Sent via the backstage.bbc.co.uk discussion group. Kevin Hinde, my News colleague and a fellow poster to this list has just written a number of answers to common queries about our use of audio/video on bbc.co.uk over at the BBC Editors' blog specifically "Why don't you use Flash ?"
