Well - if you have the money (and enough battery power and ample of pricey
thermal paper) - you get it off your navtex(1) or from the met-office feed of
immarsat(2). But I've found myself in a situation more than once where
knowing that you could be having _reliable_ warnings with just a simple
battery radio independent of it all was very reassuring.

Ah, okay - cheers Ian, it's good to know something more concrete!

I was under the impression that the PA Events Database would include
upcoming press conferences, media events, things like that - is it just
public going out event data? It's still a bloody impressive chunk of
information if it is, it's just not quite what I was expecting!

does anyone know when it'll happen? It'd come in very handy for a project idea

Re: [backstage-developer] Accessing http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/a-z from PHP

2008-05-17 Thread Tom Scott
Try using the CURL library instead of file_get_contents for accessing
external files - it's a lot more customisable, and you might be able to
get some info back about why it's locking up!

Cheers,

Is this intentional?

One deprives someone of a tangeable object,
that actually costs something to distribute, the other is data that can, and
is, being distributed virtually for free.

I said this last time, but: bloody hell, let's not start this again.
We've been round in circles on this at least four times now and I'm sick
of adding mail filters to delete the threads. Please. Can we talk about
APIs, or data dumps, or mashups, or something like that, rather than
rehashing the same old arguments that (as has been proven) won't change
the minds of those disagree?

On that subject: could there be any programmatic way of submitting
corrections to the BBC's INFAX catalogue? Right now, the only way is a
feedback form that doesn't seem to be checked. I've got at least four
entries in the catalogue, and I can see other people I know who have a
similar amount; it's wonderful data, but there has to be a better way to
submit known corrections (subject to approval, of course)...

[backstage] Hack Day - PHP team?

2007-05-18 Thread Tom Scott
Well, the first round of place confirmations for Hack Day have gone out,
and I'm lucky enough to be in - so, does anyone want to form a PHP team?
I'd go for something more hip like Ruby on Rails, but I figured that for
speedy developing it's best to stick with the language I'm most
comfortable with.

I'm generally interested in making entertaining hacks rather than
massively useful ones - games and the like.

Okay - in an effort to cut off the massive flow of I'm attending, want

there seems to be no other official discussion routes! - I've set up

as a strictly unofficial Wiki site. Hopefully it'll be a useful
discussion point as it is for BarCamp - there's a starting template for
team lists and interests, useful links, etc. etc.

It'll probably get overtaken by an official discussion board at some

Yep, that's illegal. It falls under the same category of 'illegal' as
pirate radio - using an unlicensed transmitter, which is outlawed by the
1949 Wireless Telegraphy Act. From OFCOM:

The use of equipment to jam mobile phones (or any other radio signals)
is illegal - regardless as to the location where they are used. A mobile
phone jammer is a transmitter and therefore a licence is required to use
one.

Re: [backstage] Who would you like to see at Hack Day?

2007-05-02 Thread Tom Scott
Certainly if the corporate attendees take away from the 500-person
maximum, then they should only send developers. But bear in mind that,
if companies are willing to spend Significant Amounts to sponsor Hack
Day, and that means that the day can include cool stuff that it wouldn't
otherwise have, it might be worth letting some of them have a bit of space.

Although -- given that it's in Alexandra Palace and may include a
musical guest -- I don't know what other cool stuff could be added!

I agree, send only real developers to help people. This would be good

When do we find out if we are on the list to get in? :)

I'm really looking forward to it. But I don't think I know anyone else
going :(

Or We could say – send only actual real developers to help people

Or... We could say – sorry no we'd rather you didn't come at all

I think the second option is the best, but what do you think?
